About the position

At the department of Information Security and Communication Technology, we have a vacancy for a Researcher in the Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience (CISaR) research group.

The researcher will work on research and development projects in the areas of blockchain and smart contract technology; and risk management, for critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems. 

The position creates an opportunity for more collaboration with other research disciplines such as security economics, management, law, and policymaking in addition to the focus areas mentioned above.

The position's working place is NTNU campus in Gjøvik and reports to the Head of the Department.

Duties of the position

  • Develop/improve frameworks, methods, procedures, techniques, practices that leverage blockchain and smart contract technology to secure critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems.
  • Develop/improve frameworks, methods, procedures, techniques, practices for cyber security risk management in critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems, focusing on dynamic risk assessment; modelling of cascading impact; automated risk-driven decision-making; and risk management, including by transferring risk.
  • Develop and pursue own research agenda in blockchain and smart contract technology and in cyber risk management, including risk transfer.
  • Build proactive and effective cross-disciplinary relationships, including with major standards bodies (such as ISO), researchers from the domains of economics, ethics and philosophy, law and technology etc. to ensure that efforts to exploit blockchain and smart contract. technology in critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems applications are addressed technologically by taking into account financial, legal, ethical and social challenges.
  • Contribute to the development of research and education in the group and IIK by leading and supporting new research and innovation. 
  • Work on initiating, organizing, writing, coordinating, and developing national and international projects of high quality, e.g. NFR (The Research Council of Norway), Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe. 
  • Coordinate and manage the CISaR team working on R&D projects in blockchain and smart contract technology, risk management, and other areas of interest of the group.
  • Participate as an active member in CISaR and IIK activities, including supervision and co-supervision of MSc and PhD students.
  • Contribute to standardization activities in the area of blockchain and smart contract technology.

Required selection criteria

  • A degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in information security, computer science, information technology, interdisciplinary PhD (intersection of information security or computer science and management or economics) or equivalent.
  • At least three years of research experience after the completion of the doctoral research.
  • Extensive knowledge and a solid understanding of blockchain and smart contract technology; and of cyber risk management.
  • Significant experience in integrating blockchain and smart contract technology in critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems security solutions.
  • Experience in working on risk management, and scenario-based impact assessments for critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems.
  • Experience with having taken responsibility in EU projects related to cyber security for critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems.
  • Experience with having developed research project proposals for external funding bodies such as the European Commission, Research Council of Norway, etc.
  • Track record with publications on relevant research areas in credible journals and conferences.
  • Being able to attend and present at national and international forums.
  • Being able to travel frequently.
  • Good written and oral English language skills. Applicants must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken.

The following tests can be used as such documentation:

  • TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).  Minimum scores are:TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Preferred selection criteria

  • PhD and/or Postdoc in areas related to blockchain and smart contract technology; and cyber security risk transfer and management for critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems.
  • Knowledge of emerging Distributed Ledger Technologies.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of theories and models for risk analysis and management related to critical infrastructure and cyber-physical systems.
  • Knowledge of standards, strategies, policies, and regulations for blockchain and smart contract technology.

Personal characteristics

  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad range of topics covered by the activities of the CISaR group.
  • Initiative taking and self-starter who works well with minimal supervision and shows excellent judgement about when to look to managers and teammates for guidance, and when and how to communicate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Team player with a proven track record of building cross-functional relationships and ability to work in an international research team.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills, both written and verbal persuasiveness and strong influential skills.
  • Eager to learn with a high desire to perform and disseminate high-quality research.

We offer

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 560 000 – 760 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU

The position is subject to external funding.
