Job Description Summary

The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the “go-to” organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Job Description

Our Program of Comparative Medicine is expanding, and as part of that expansion, we are looking to add a Rodent Breeding Colony Technician, to support Animal research and care.

As a Rodent Breeding Colony Technician, under the direction of the Transgenic Colony Manager you perform routine and specialized duties associated with producing and maintain colonies of transgenic research rodents. You will perform husbandry duties as needed to maintain a sanitary environment for breeding animals, provide specialized diets and other necessary interventions such as teeth trimming and assistance in identification and treatment of clinical cases. The Rodent Breeding Colony Technician use colony management software to maintain detailed and accurate records (GLP and non-GLP) of all colonies. You will execute environmental enrichment programs as per departmental standard operating procedures.

Employees in this position will participate in an occupational safety and health program which requires tuberculin testing and potentially immunization. Weekend work, holiday work and overtime hours are a requirement of this position. May be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster. Responsibilities must be performed with minimal instruction and persons will be expected to independently perform duties as described.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma and one of the following: (1) 3 years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience or (2) certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT)
• Ability to follow oral and written instruction
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Must have the ability to work with nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species without jeopardizing the health status of the animals
• GTP maintains ABSL 2 facilities; ability to perform job duties while wearing respiratory protection may be required
