The Department of Ophthalmology and its Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University School of Medicine, is a top-tier, internationally recognized, multidisciplinary center combining world-class resources with a commitment to providing the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic care to our patients. The scientists and clinical researchers collaborate to investigate the origins of ocular disease and devise new diagnostic and treatment modalities. As part of a world-renowned teaching hospital, our ophthalmologists use these state-of-the-art modalities to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. The department of ophthalmology invites nominations and applications for the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) to serve as the senior business leader.
Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Operations for the School of Medicine, the DFA provides strategic leadership for the operations, administration and finances of the department of ophthalmology. As the business partner to the Chair, this critical leadership position will ensure sound management of the department of ophthalmology, with an annual budget of $40 million, and work with the Chair and faculty leaders on research, clinical patient care, and education programs and initiatives to enable the department of ophthalmology to achieve its strategic and operational goals. Additionally, the DFA serves as the liaison to the school and university in all business matters for the department. This position is a key leadership role for the department of ophthalmology and is responsible for creating a positive culture while striving for excellence in customer service for the students, researchers, physicians, and patients.
The DFA provides leadership of all financial and administrative functions including: budgeting and financial management, strategic planning, human resources, research grant and contract administration, academic affairs, facilities/space, compliance, and safety. The DFA manages department operations, establishes the administration's organizational structure and environment, develops and implements departmental administrative policies and processes with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement. The duties of this position typically focus on operational and strategic demands, supported by multiple levels of professional and supervisory staff. As a clinical department, the DFA will also have considerable interaction with Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children’s Health as well as the other two Stanford-affiliated health systems – the Palo Alto Veteran’s Administration Medical Center and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
- Develop strategic plans of considerable complexity and scope for the department of ophthalmology, and its research, education, and clinical programs in collaboration with the chair, faculty, and health system leadership.
- Set the direction of the department of ophthalmology’s internal academic and administrative policy for programs and administrative operations.
- Propose and manage the implementation of complex and significant programmatic changes that may impact the department of ophthalmology’s academic and research capabilities.
- Serve as the primary liaison and collaborate with the School’s central functions, Research Management, Fiscal Affairs, Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and Facilities management on department of ophthalmology initiatives.
- Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the department of ophthalmology.
- Consult and advise senior leadership as needed.
- Responsible for the financial viability and success of the department of ophthalmology.
- Partner with the health systems in development of business plans and program planning; negotiate and monitor funds flow and productivity targets. Recommend and develop strategies for clinical cost accounting, revenue management and productivity reporting.
- Oversee the department of ophthalmology’s annual consolidated budget planning process. Responsible for committing resources (within school and university guidelines) with limited review by chair and faculty leadership.
- Develop comprehensive financial analysis and advise senior leadership on investment decisions.
- Design compensation plans, new faculty recruitment packages, & manage annual incentive payments for faculty; ensure incentives are accurate and equitable.
- Administer annual salary setting process for faculty, annual review of incentive plan, and year-end incentive processes.
- Assess, implement, and monitor strong financial internal controls to ensure compliance with school, university, and agency policies.
Operations & Administration:
- Partner with health systems to achieve patient satisfaction, value improvement, and quality of care goals.
- Represent and negotiate the department of ophthalmology’s current and future needs in regard to education, research, clinical, and service facilities with the school and health system leadership.
- Support program directors and faculty in management of educational programs including, program reviews, alignment to policies, and academic appointments of visiting faculty.
- Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with academic and administrative policies and procedures within the department of ophthalmology.
- Manages the research resources of the department, to include grant and contract staff and processes, research staff support, capital equipment, IRB, and Protected Health Information (PHI) compliance issues.
- Support the central academic affairs with faculty recruitment, reappointment, and promotions.
- Manage the information requirements and communication needs of the department including website and online presence.
- Manage facilities to ensure effective, efficient, and safe operations, including space planning and manage equipment and inventory.
- Direct the overall human resources and organizational development goals of the department of ophthalmology.
- Provide leadership in continuous improvement for business processes, coach staff, and work with School of Medicine Process Excellence team to build process improvement efforts.
- Ensure all personnel management functions are successfully performed, including recruitment and retention, employee on-boarding, personal development, career coaching, employee relations, grievances and the equitable administration of compensation programs.
- Responsible for ensuring a diverse and inclusive environment for staff, faculty, and trainees who represent diversity in race, ethnicity, gender identification, disability and abilities, sexual preference, and perspectives.
- May independently or in collaboration with University human resources, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.
Education & Experience:
- Master’s degree (BA, Health Care Administration, Public health or related field) or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Five years of progressively responsible managerial experience including financial and budget preparation.
- Three years of supervisory experience.

- Advanced financial expertise in accounting, budget planning, and financial forecasting.
- Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.

- Experience managing NIH and NIS portfolios
- Experience in a clinical enterprise and / or academic medical center
- Experience with Pre-Award and Post Award management
- Experience partnering with leadership to build and promote the educational curriculum within a department.
- Experience administering or managing operations and finance (faculty compensation and time allocation)
