Job description
The research associate will join a research project entitled 'Mental Health in Adversity' which is jointly funded by King's College London and the Sao  Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). This project, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Sao Paolo and the Human Rights Centre in the favela of Sapopemba, investigates the experience of mental health in the favelas of Sao Paolo.

Based in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, the post-holder will be responsible for managing communications with the research team in Sao Paolo, contributing to the research methods and data analysis, maintaining and organising research data and assisting the project Primary Investigator in preparing materials for publications and policy proposals.

The postholder will have a PhD in a relevant discipline (either completed or close to completion) and strong knowledge of social determinants of mental health. They must also have experience in managing research projects and in undertaking and analysing qualitative social science research.

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 12 months

This is a part-time post - 40% full time equivalent (14 hours/week)

Key responsibilities

  • To manage the communications with the research team in Sao Paulo
  • To participate in discussions about research methods and data analysis
  • To maintain and organise the data and research findings
  • To coordinate the translations of qualitative data into English as required (using a professional translators).
  • To assist in the preparation of material for publication, and proposals for policy changes to improve the mental health that arise from this research.
  • To provide other support for the research to the PI, Professor Nikolas Rose as required. 
  • To contribute to meetings and events in the Department and more widely

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria 

  • A PhD in a relevant area (e.g. sociology, anthropology, or a cognate discipline) or PhD in a relevant area near completion* 
  • Experience in managing International research projects 
  • Experience in collecting, managing and analysing qualitative social science research data 
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the social determinants of mental health
  • Ability to write clearly, accurately, and intelligibly for both academic and non-academic audiences 
  • High level of digital competency 

Desirable criteria 

  • Experience in and/or commitment to participatory methods of user involvement in research 
  • Knowledge of and interest in Latin America and/or Brazil 
  • Knowledge of the sociology of Brazil especially with reference to favalas
