Job Description Summary

The Neurons R Us (NRU) Cell Center needs a research specialist who will prepare suspensions of embryonic rodent brain cells and cell cultures for distribution to various investigators University-wide. The candidate is required to have experience with rodent handling (rat and mouse), tissue dissection, as well as basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel. The candidate will also be involved, as necessary, in daily core operations including communication with other researchers and development of new protocols for cell culture.

Job Description

The Penn Medicine Neurons-R-Us (NRU) Cell Service Core within the Penn Medicine Translational Neuroscience Center (PTNC) is looking for a candidate who will serve as an animal dissection and tissue culture specialist. The research specialist will prepare suspensions of embryonic rodent brain cells and in some cases cell cultures for distribution to various investigators University-wide. The candidate is required to have experience with rodent handling (rat and mouse), tissue dissection, as well as basic skills with Microsoft Word and Excel. Training on specific and established methods for dissection and cell processing will be provided. The candidate will also be involved in daily core operations, including communication with other researchers and development of new protocols for animal cell culture. Candidate will be responsible for tracking orders and creating invoices for billing. Will also be responsible for animal and supply inventories and ordering. Will contribute to the development and expansion of new services that can be offered through the core. Candidate will be responsible for maintaining all equipment. Other duties supporting the Core and/or the PTNC as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s Degree and 1 year to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Greater than 2 years experience in animal handling and tissue culture methods preferred. Must have experience and be fully trained in animal handling (rodents) and dissection procedures. Must have basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel and be willing to learn other software related to the job. Must have demonstrated a strong work ethic, meticulous organization, and strong communication skills.
