Position Focus:

This position supports multiple labs in Cardiovascular Research Department with mouse colony management, census, new animal user training, resolving breeding issues and monitoring health of mice. Skills required are mouse weaning, tissue sample collection for genotyping, monitor facility temp/humidity and report as needed. This may include blood collection and injection. Must be able to access and understand protocols. Must be able to train new mouse users. Communication with YARC, Rodent QA and Veterinary Services is essential. Record keeping using Word and Excel.

Essential Duties

1. Using specialized working knowledge of one or more functional areas of animal husbandry, conducts animal husbandry, sanitation and handling duties, including moderate to high hazard areas, e.g. BL 3. 2. Observes and evaluates animals for signs of illness and stress and deviations in animal conditions. Feeds, houses, and handles animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations. 3. Provides research and technical support to investigators. Conducts or oversees procedures such as blood collection, injections and/or routine surgical procedures. Prepares reports and provides updates to investigators regarding the status of animals. 4. Using protocols established by PI or manager, manages and maintains breeding colonies for research. Establishes and carries out strategic breeding plans according to specific protocols or instructions. 5. Maintains detailed records regarding animal colonies such as births, deaths, weaning, and breeding and other records required by institutional, local and federal regulations. 6. Coordinates daily functions for a washing center. Assigns staff to maximize operating efficiency and ensures production according to required schedules. Ensures and maintains established quality standards. 7. May train and/or instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint and care techniques, appropriate to level. 8. Performs additional related tasks as necessary.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or four years of related experience and an Associate Degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Demonstrated ability with mouse weaning, tissue sample collection for genotyping, monitor facility temp/humidity and report as needed.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven ability with blood collection and injection of mice.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to access and understand protocols.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to train new mouse users.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to effectively communication with Yale Animal Resource Center (YARC), Rodent QA and Veterinary Services is essential. Record keeping using Word and Excel.
