Role Description

We welcome applications from those individuals with a track record in design of optimised airframe structures or mechanics.

As the UK’s only exclusively postgraduate university, Cranfield’s world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and unrivalled industry partnerships is creating leaders in technology and management globally.  Our distinctive expertise is in our deep understanding of technology and management and how these work together to benefit the world.

Our people are our most valuable resource and everyone has a role to play in shaping the future of our university, developing our learners, and transforming the businesses we work with. Learn more about Cranfield and our unique impact here. Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Find out more here.

Cranfield Aerospace is one of the eight themes at Cranfield University offering world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together aircraft and spacecraft design including structures, aerodynamics, systems, avionics, power propulsion, flight control technologies, air transport management and AI expertise. We develop novel technologies and improve the science base of research in those areas. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on numerical modelling and simulation, and experiment of airframe structures for integrity and sustainability.

A PhD (or equivalent) is typically expected for this position, however applicants with significant experience in a relevant industry or commercial setting are also encouraged to apply.

Ideally, you will have teaching or industrial work experience, programming skills and a good command of commercial software applicable to the design of airframe and numerical analysis of structures and aerodynamics; in particular aeroelasticity.

As a member of academic staff, you will be expected to contribute to teaching, supervision and management of our MSc courses and you will be expected to have excellent communication skills. In this role, you will design and deliver lectures and tutorials as part of the taught MSc programme in Aerospace Vehicle Design, provide support to the Group Design Project element of the MSc, and you will provide supervision for MSc individual research theses. MSc in Aircraft Engineering and pre-Masters in Engineering also sit within the Aircraft Design Group, and your role will include supporting these courses, together with short courses and acting as assistant Course Director in the future.  You will also undertake PhD supervision, research fund bidding and delivery of research projects, so a strong track record of writing high quality papers in top rated research journals is essential.

In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development to a senior position in our world leading research and education team and supportive working environment.

At Cranfield we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.

Our equal opportunities and diversity monitoring has shown that women and minority ethnic groups are currently underrepresented within the university and so we actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from these groups.

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role. Find out more here.
