Job Summary

The Assistant Director will report to the Senior Director of Inclusion and Diversity. As a member of the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity team, the Assistant Director is responsible for programming & initiatives that promote a supportive campus environment conducive to the intellectual, scientific, and professional achievement of excellence at Caltech for underserved students, staff, and faculty populations. The Assistant Director will develop and oversee programs that advocate for students, staff, and faculty to improve pipeline, outreach, retention, achievement, graduation rates, and satisfaction for underrepresented-minority undergraduate and graduate students. This position will sit on campus-wide committees, work on special projects, and provide various training activities throughout the year. The Assistant Director must maintain an active, visible, and accessible presence on campus, which will require some hours in the evening and on the weekend.

Job Duties

  • Provide information, advocacy, referral and other direct services to Diversity Center clientele.
  • Implement Diversity Center programs for women such as mentoring and leadership initiatives, educational outreach events, cultural events and first year Women’s and campus diversity programs).
  • Be a resource for underrepresented, underserved and minorities including implementing programming, delivering support services, providing education and outreach.
  • Support LGBTQ students with issues related to sexual orientation, coming out, safe communities, identity development, college transitions, family transitions, etc. and serve as a central contact for Caltech LGBTQ clubs and organizations.
  • As a confidential resource, provide ongoing support, advocacy, and education with respect to issues around sexual violence, gender, gender identity, and gender expression.
  • Provide advocacy for victims/survivors of sexual violence and dating violence and be a member of the campus’ coordinated response when needed.
  • Implement programs focused on educating the campus community about healthy relationships, healthy sexuality, consent, sexual harassment, bystander intervention, in collaboration with other campus departments and/or off-campus resources.
  • Assist with “theme week” and “theme month” events (e.g. Women’s History Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month).
  • Support clubs and organizations with ties to the Diversity Center (e.g. Society of Women Engineers, Reading Women, etc.).
  • Advise women’s oversight groups (e.g. Women Mentoring Women Advisory Board, the Student Steering Committee).
  • Develop and implement on and off campus outreach and marketing efforts including a weekly email calendar and other office publications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Student Affairs, Women’s Studies or related field
  • 1 year of experience in a college setting working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work with and support a diverse group of students with an emphasis on those who are women, underrepresented minorities, and LGBTQ.
  • Demonstrated success in designing, implementing, and presenting educational programs
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work successfully with a variety of constituencies and offices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Web design and desktop publishing skills
