We are particularly eager to hear from applicants with strengths in synthetic chemistry.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching while allowing you unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution. Durham Chemistry is one of the very best in the UK, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in research and teaching. We were ranked second in the Guardian University League Table 2021 and rated a world Top 100 Chemistry Department according to the QS World University Ranking by subject 2020. We have a strong cohort of early career researchers, future leaders, pursuing innovative research agendas and hold an Athena Swan Bronze Award supporting the development of women in science.
Our research is centred on three core themes, Manufacturing the Future, Bio-economy and New Materials, all of which are truly global challenges with the potential to generate significant economic and social impact.
To support these themes researchers with common interests and complementary skills are clustered together in Research Groupings. We currently have six research groupings: Functional Molecules & Materials; Physical Organic & Assembly; Computational & Dynamics; Soft Matter & Interfaces; Catalysis & Sustainable Chemical Processes; and Bioactive Chemistry & Synthesis. At postgraduate level our students come from all over the world to carryout research. Durham Chemistry (in conjunction with other departments in the Faculty of Science and in partnership with the Universities of Leeds and Edinburgh), is home to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Soft Matter and Interfaces, SOFI2 CDT. We are also a partnership with the University of Newcastle in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Molecular Sciences for Medicine.
