Position Focus:

Under the general direction of the Senior Financial Analyst, and with latitude for exercising independent judgment, the Financial Analyst will be responsible for performing a variety of analytical and financial functions in support of Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) financial planning, controls and compliance, budgeting, forecasting and reporting.

Essential Duties:

  • Under the direction of the Senior Financial Analyst, reviews endowment and gift transactions ensuring adherence to donor restrictions and University policies.
  • Requests new chart of account (COA) segments for the department, ensuring financial effectiveness and compliance with required internal and external reporting.
  • Researches and resolves problems for non-sponsored accounts.
  • Performs account reviews, including monitoring spending trends, and notifies management of potentials issues and suggests solutions.
  • Prepares journal entries and payroll accounting adjustments with all required backup for entry by Financial Assistants.
  • Reconciles dowry accounts and general appropriations for the department.
  • Prepares monthly financial reports for Faculty and Management.
  • Performs assigned tasks to comply with university requirements for the monthly financial review checklist.
  • Conducts quarterly audit checks within the department on transactions that are governed by Yale and sponsor restrictions, i.e., Fly America Act and Travel on University Business policy requirements, and presents findings to the Senior Financial Analyst for review.
  • Responsibilities include verifying data in the Yale Budgeting Tool (YBT) is accurate and complete in support of the School’s annual budget and quarterly monitoring practices, providing financial projections and analyses to determine present and future financial performance, supporting the year-end closing and reporting procedures for the School.
  • Other duties involve a variety of financial & analytical review and quality assurance activities to ensure compliance Yale policies, accounting principles and sponsor requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director

Essential Duties

  1.  Financial modeling and forecasting: Provides analysis to determine present and future financial performance. Organizes information from a variety of sources for use in analyzing future plans and forecasts. Collaborates with all levels of management, both internally and externally, to gather, analyze, summarize, prepare, and present recommendations regarding financial activities. Researches information to help resolve issues and make recommendations.
  2. Financial analysis and reporting: Analyzes information and creates accurate and timely reports. Ensures financial reporting meets the compliance needs of internal and external users. Extracts data from multiple sources.
  3. Financial methods and systems: Recommends methods to improve practices, processes and systems. Works with internal and external contacts to carry out department objectives. Provides a high level of service that cultivates and maintains strong working relationships and effectively communicates information; takes ownership and accountability for timeliness, accuracy and relationship management.
  4. Strategic Resource: Translates unit finance objectives into priorities. Reports financial issues and risks and makes recommendations. Contacts appropriate stakeholders to include in communications and approvals
  5. Compliance and risk management: Establishes, implements and/or maintains strong internal controls in areas of assigned responsibility to provide reasonable assurance of effective and appropriate resources use, accurate financial information, and adherence to contractual obligations and agreements, policies, procedures, and external regulatory requirements.
  6. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated application of financial, accounting and economic concepts.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to adapt communication style to address the needs of individuals at all levels throughout the university.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to create new and complex reports (Excel, Word, etc) for tracking, analysis and communication of financial information.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Intermediate knowledge of financial and economic concepts, modeling and analysis. Intermediate knowledge of budgeting and planning principles and processes.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work independently, multitask, use good judgment, work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Thorough working knowledge of departmental financial reporting and analysis. Experience with Workday. Knowledge of Yale University business, accounting and financial policies and procedures. Knowledge of University financial systems, Yale Budgeting Tool (YBT).
