University of Salford
Dean - School of Science, Engineering and Environment

Since our beginnings as the Salford Royal Technical Institute in 1896, we have been industry focused and daring, developing the skills of working people for nearly 125 years; collaboration with external partners is in our DNA. We pride ourselves on preparing our students to be industry ready and having the skills for the future.

The School of Science, Engineering and Environment, a home to a diverse, global community of over 4000 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students, supported by over 300 colleagues, is a hub of discovery and innovation. Drawing on an academic portfolio from architecture to zoology, our multidisciplinary approach is designed to shape the next generation of scientists, engineers, urbanists, and climate leaders.

The School is central to the University’s identity as an institution that is responding to the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It was formed in 2018 from the unification of three smaller Schools to provide opportunities for interdisciplinary working across its broad academic offer, concentrating around the built and natural environments and technological and manufacturing advances that will ensure a smart, sustainable future for all.  We are supporting this area with considerable investment, with the construction of a new Science building and Energy House 2.0, a multi-chamber environmental testing facility, already under way and the development of our new North of England Robotics Innovation Centre commencing soon.

The role of Dean is an exciting opportunity to perform a critical transformational role within this high-profile School. As Dean you will have overall accountability for all aspects of strategic and managerial leadership within the School, driving it forward in support of the University’s strategic vision of Industry Collaboration as being at the heart of our student experience and success, our research and enterprise and the relationship between these activities.

Candidates will bring an impressive academic background in a discipline relevant to those represented in the School in addition to a record of leadership at a senior level, where you have established a vision and distinctive position for your academic area. Importantly, you will understand people and what great leadership looks like, and the importance of demonstrating leadership behaviours by role modelling them.  You will enjoy building strong and credible relationships with other leaders both internally and externally, with the ability to work alongside others in a strong senior leadership team to drive both the success of the School and the wider University of Salford.

The closing date for applications is noon on Friday 5 February 2021.

We are committed to an inclusive approach to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. We aim to have a more diverse workforce at all levels of the institution and particularly welcome applications from people from minority ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities, who are under-represented in our workforce.
