Position Focus:

The golf course superintendent is responsible for overseeing the grounds maintenance operations at the historic Yale Golf Course. This includes the golf course, practice range and clubhouse. The golf superintendent is accountable for the procurement, payment processing and financial tracking of all supplies and materials and equipment related to grounds maintenance as well as monitoring and processing all payroll associated with full time and seasonal staff. As the manager of the grounds workforce, the superintendent schedules daily duties, provides training and monitors golf course activity and adjusts as needed. Maintains communication daily with the General Manager regarding golf course conditions or maintenance issues that may affect normal play.

The focus of the Yale Golf Course Superintendent is to provide a consistent championship level golf experience for the students, student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni of Yale University.

Essential Duties

  1. Develop a day to day maintenance program and make recommendations on enhancing agronomic conditions.
  2. Supervises and schedules work assignments for University grounds maintenance staff at the golf course.
  3. Provide guidance on restoration projects and make recommendations on renovations.
  4. Establish maintenance standards to maintain the quality of turf conditions.
  5. Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his or her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-range goals.
  6. Makes daily rounds of the golf course to ensure the quality of work performed, determine treatments and improvements to grounds.
  7. Develops and implements daily golf preparation to schedule including course set up, mowing schedule and bunker preparation.
  8. Schedules and monitors all spraying of pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals to ensure a disease-free environment.
  9. Responsible for equipment, supplies and parts procurement, inventory controls and oversees equipment maintenance programs.
  10. Determines when the use of outside contractors to accomplish maintenance goals is appropriate.
  11. Keeps accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications etc.
  12. Programs, maintains and adjusts automated irrigation and pump house systems.
  13. Responsible for organization and cleanliness of maintenance barn.
  14. Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his or her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-range goals.
  15. Determines and procures the necessary pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals to ensure a disease-free environment.
  16. Responsible for equipment, supplies and parts procurement, inventory controls and oversees equipment maintenance programs.Staff Management:
  17. Working with YUAD HR\\ Labor Relations follows the contractual language with respect to supervision and progressive disciplinary procedures.
  18. Manages seasonal student staffing when available
  19. Develops training programs and work procedures for grounds maintenance work unit.
  20. Provides daily routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish defined maintenance standards
  21. Reviews need for OT based on budget and follows contractual OT equalization policies.
  22. Adjusts and approves weekly staff payroll using university automated KRONOS payroll systems.
  23. Evaluates and approves staff vacation requests.Financial
  24. Monitors the general appropriation budget and reconciles expenses.
  25. Approves and processes all invoices in a timely manner.
  26. Creates expense reports for credit card expenditures using WorkDay.
  27. Utilizes University procurement policies to improve pricing.
  28. Creates inventory controls and manages inventory levels.
  29. Supervises material and supply ordering and buying practices.Health and Safety:
  30. Follows guidelines established by Yale Environmental Health and Safety.
  31. Provides appropriate personal protective equipment for staff.
  32. Monitors environmental records and regulations (i.e., water usage per state regulations).
  33. Notifies staff on all chemical applications to ensure safety.
  34. Provides necessary training opportunities for staff as required by EHS University’s Training Management System.Management Skills and Communication:
  35. Communicates to the golf operations staff regarding golf course conditions or maintenance issues that may affect normal play.
  36. Engages the grounds staff professionally and courteously in providing feedback or details on work duties.
  37. Promotes interaction with grounds staff to promote teamwork.
  38. Encourages staff and provides opportunities to attend workshops and seminars related to agronomics.
  39. Aligns with Yale University Best Practices initiatives to create best possible work environment.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Turf Grass Management, Agronomy, or related field of golf course maintenance.
  2. Eight years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

High degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem-solving and decision-making.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent supervisory and conflict management skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods. A thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf. Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turf grass management practices.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Working knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Working knowledge of computers and computer software including email, Microsoft Word and Excel and automated irrigation systems.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum of 2 yrs as a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent minimum of 3 yrs preferred. Familiarity with university and union work environments.

Required Licenses or Certifications

Golf Course or Custom Grounds State Pesticide License.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

Certified Golf Course Superintendent. Member of Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).
