Position Focus:

Under the general direction of a Principal Investigator (PI) in the Department of Immunobiology and working closely with a senior Research Associate, the candidate would provide technical support within a general basic research laboratory studying human Tumor Immunology utilizing a Patient-Derived Xenograft (PDX) mouse model. After appropriate training, this person will spend a percentage of their time maintaining a mouse colony with several genetically-modified mouse strains, in addition to performing research involving the processing of human blood and tumors, implantation of human PBMC and tumors into mice, administration of experimental therapeutics into mice, dissection and analysis of experimental animals, genotyping, histology, cell culture, flow cytometry and microscopy. The ideal candidate will have the flexibility to work occasional hours on evenings and weekends (as needed), based on experimental design.

Essential Duties

  1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
  2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning
  3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
  4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
  5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.
  6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
  7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong technical and scientific abilities to perform complex laboratory experiments and procedures. Detail-oriented in experimental work and record keeping. Ability to maintains clear documentation of results.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to interact with internal contacts including the PI, research associate and Post-Docs. Ability to contribute to the planning and execution of basic research studies.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to follow complex, multi-step protocols precisely and understand the scientific basis of the protocol and trouble shoot complex, multi-step protocols with limited supervision.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Positive attitude, strong work ethic and the ability to work directly with others or to work independently (depending on the given task). Ability to be trained on new techniques and experimental protocols. Excellent time management skills to manage multiple ongoing projects. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline and one year or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in mouse colony management including animal handling, husbandry, and minor invasive procedures preferred. Experience with PCR, basic mouse genotyping protocols and cell culture desired. Educational understanding of Immunology would be helpful.
