Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a research professional to support all research in the in vitro BSL3 Service Center.

The qualified candidate Must have extensive hands-on experience with mammalian cell-culture; previous experience working with viruses or bacteria is desirable.  Experience with flow cytometry and/or microscopy desirable. Must complete required training to carryout experiments in Biosafety Level-2 and Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) environments.   BSL-3 work will include working with SARS-CoV-2 and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is expected that this researcher will adhere to SOPs to ensure safe operations inside the BSL-3 suites. This researcher will be expected to be able to work independently to carry out the complicated experimental protocols of Stanford Faculty and other users. They will also be expected to cross-train in various techniques/instrumentation to assist with routine troubleshooting as needed.

Responsibilities also include laboratory organization, cleaning and decontamination; ordering and stocking of laboratory as needed. Analyzing and reporting experimental results. Researcher should be detail-oriented and meticulous.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with viruses and/or bacteria.
  • Experience with flow-cytometry and/or microscopy.
  • BSL 2 or 3 research experience.
  • Certified Biosafety Professional (CBSP) or Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) from the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA).

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):  

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related life science field and two years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.

  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
