Working at MIT offers opportunities, an environment, a culture – and benefits – that just aren’t found together anywhere else. If you’re curious, motivated, want to be part of a unique community, and help shape the future – then take a look at this opportunity.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, to join a collaboration between the Manalis Lab (MIT) and the Polz Lab (recently moved from MIT to University of Austria) working on research that is at the interface of novel instrumentation for single cell analysis and environmental microbiology aimed at understanding how microbes grow in the ocean under varying spatial and temporal conditions.  It is largely unknown how fast individual microbes grow under in situ conditions, how growth rates differ among groups of microbes, and how they are modulated by ecological conditions. To address such questions, the labs have proposed to develop a single-cell based system that allows coupled measurement of in situ cell mass and growth rates with genomic characteristics.  If successful, this project will facilitate understanding of the microbial contribution to environmental processes and the incorporation of these processes into ecological, biogeochemical, and climate models. The labs employ graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and technical staff with a range of scientific backgrounds from engineering to biology.
