Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

in urban carbon cycle starting earliest from January 2021 for a fixed-term employment contract until February 2023 (total length 26 months) in an Academy of Finland Strategic Research Council funded research project Individuals, communities and municipalities mitigating climate change by carbon-smart green space (CO-CARBON).

The postdoctoral researcher will be working in the urban meteorology group in INAR (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/urban-meteorology). The group studies urban atmosphere, air quality and greenhouse gas cycle using a wide-range of methodologies including eddy covariance technique, land surface modelling and a large eddy simulation (LES). We are particularly interested on how urban carbon sinks and storages to urban green space can be maximized.

CO-CARBON is an interdisciplinary project between University of Helsinki, Aalto University, Finnish Meteorological Institute and Häme University of Applied Sciences. The aim of is to quantify the carbon storage or green spaces at different urban scales using novel measurements and process-based models at the same time when accounting for other socio-ecological factors, and support practical operations for the multiple planning and management needs of carbon-smart urban green infrastructure. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for field campaigns measuring urban carbon cycle using chamber and eddy covariance measurements in Helsinki, and conducting urban land surface model simulations using SUEWS (the Surface Urban Energy and Water balance Scheme) at different urban green space.
The focus will be on understanding the key factors impacting urban biogenic carbon cycle.

Ideal candidates are required to have:

• a doctoral degree in forest sciences, atmospheric sciences, meteorology, environmental sciences or other related disciplines;
• experience in conducting field measurements;
• proficiency in spoken and written English;
