UK and China based - Required from July 2021

If your subject expertise lies in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and you would relish the opportunity to gain exposure to teaching and learning in China, develop research partnerships and experience Chinese culture first-hand, the Manchester Metropolitan Joint Institute (MHJI) at Hubei University in Wuhan could be your ideal next career move.

One of the top 200 modern universities in the world, Manchester Metropolitan is renowned for its research and teaching in areas such as science and engineering, business, creative writing, architecture and fashion. To build upon our success, and as part of a long-term plan to enhance our reputation, further develop our ties with China and promote study opportunities in Manchester, we recently opened a new office in Wuhan. An exciting strategic project for the University that will raise our international profile, it will also enable the Lecturers we appoint to benefit from a truly unique experience.

As a Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, you’ll be responsible for developing and delivering a variety of high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop research partnerships with colleagues at Hubei University and/or continue to plan and carry out your own research and publish the results. Promoting the department, faculty and university by supporting a range of activities will be important too. And, when it comes to seeking knowledge transfer and business engagement opportunities, developing partnerships to share best practice or exploring the possibility of collaborations, again, we’ll look to you to play your part.

To succeed, you’ll need a good first degree and PhD in a relevant discipline (or equivalent qualifications). You’ll also need a PGCE, Certificate of Education, PGCLTHE, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or an agreed professional equivalent (or willingness to obtain within three years of appointment). Membership of relevant professional bodies is also required, as is an in-depth understanding of the subject Electrical and Electronic Engineering, including recent developments. Committed to ensuring teaching content is stimulating, inspiring, appropriately challenging and reflective of the current state of the discipline and/or professional subject bodies, you’re also adept at using initiative, creativity and judgement when undertaking research and scholarly activities.

The appointment is initially for four years, with an extension of a further four years by mutual agreement. You’ll be based at Hubei University’s campus in Wuhan from September to May, with paid return flights to the UK mid-way through the year for a vacation. A comprehensive induction programme to teaching and living in China will be provided, along with ongoing support to ensure you enjoy a good working environment, plus free accommodation on campus at Hubei University.
