Job Description Summary

Responsible for both strategic planning and day to day management of complex and broad range of projects conducted with collaborators both internal and external to Penn. With mentoring from the Principal Investigator, the Research Project Manager will take leadership role in developing study protocols, writing grants, managing the detailed operations of projects, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, cultivating close relationships with community partner organizations, and drafting/editing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journal. He/she will help develop the team's research strategy and will have ample opportunities to lead projects and co-author papers. Will be required to ensure that studies/research are conducted safely and according to protocol, provide supervision to educators and teams conducting the study/interventions and collaborates with peers from other Universities and funding agencies. Will also be responsible for coordinating grant applications and interacts with funding administrators and the University Business Office. Provides significant contributions to presentations and manuscripts, including multiple drafts for review and dissemination. Plays a primary role in other dissemination activities related to project findings.

This position is for a Lab Manager within the Morgan Laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The lab manager will be responsible for managing the research activities and staff that carry out those activities within the lab. The lab manager will be required to manage multiple studies to ensure that each study has adequate access to lab resources including imaging equipment and study staff. This will include prioritizing research activities to ensure the successful completion of all projects in line with funded research and lab priorities. The lab manager will be expected to train new lab personnel to acquire data, including the custom-built adaptive optics optical system. The lab manager will also be expected to train lab personnel on data analysis and study protocols. This person will manage all aspects of multiple clinical trials, including overseeing the planning and completion of study visits and the administrative aspects of the study including IRB and study monitoring responsibilities. This individual will also supervise the data analysis for multiple studies, will delegate analysis tasks to lab members, will evaluate the returned results to ensure high quality and timely completion, and will carry out image analysis procedures including subjective grading of images. The lab manager will also be expected to collect data using custom built optical equipment and standard care ophthalmic instruments. It is expected that the Lab Manager will have completed his/her Certified Medical Ophthalmic Technologist's (CMOT) license as the quality of image results expected for the Morgan lab is higher than the quality expected for standard clinical imaging.

Qualifications

Master's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required

Supervise Image analysis – analyze retinal imaging data, including subjectively grading images.  Delegate analysis tasks to lab members, evaluate returned results for timely completion and high quality 

Acquire custom AOSLO retinal images – Operate custom-built adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope, acquire structure and function images of single cells in patients and normal sighted volunteers. 

Manage research staff and research activities – Manage multiple studies, ensuring that all studies have adequate time and access to lab resources including imaging equipment, balancing study activities in line with funded research and lab priorities. 

Train Lab Personnel – Train new lab staff including post docs, graduate students, medical students, post-bacs, clinical coordinators, and undergraduates who join the Morgan lab on imaging and analysis procedures and study protocols. 

Manage/Coordinate multiple clinical trials – Plan and carry out all patient study visits.  Complete study procedures, ensuring study patients and staff adhere to clinical trial protocols.  Manage administration of clinical trials, including IRB and monitoring requirements.

Acquire standard care ophthalmic images – operate clinical standard of care instruments including fundus cameras, optical coherence photography units, microperimetry, visual fields, IOL master, slip lamp.

Maintain lab resources – Maintain database of all study data and results, maintain lab equipment, manage service contracts, upgrades and backups.
