Job Description Summary

  • Work with a global proteomics heart failure consortium to analyze large proteomics and genomic datasets from international cohorts. 
  • Experience with genomics (including Mendelian Randomization), proteomics and gene-protein correlation analyses is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience with deep learning applications for cardiovascular phenotypes is also desirable. 
  • Analyze (large scale) biomedical data with general statistical methods and applications 
  • Implement and manage biomedical data with databases, query interfaces and web applications. 
  • Retrieve biomedical NGS data from public resources and organize the data for easy analysis and sharing. 
  • Prepare results in tabular, written summary, & graphical summary form suitable for publication and peer review. 
  • Provide some bioinformatics support to faculty and their staff including performing computational analysis, exploration of parameter settings, comparison of results across different methods, and the summary and visualization of data and results for presentation to faculty and their staff. 
  • Implement deep learning pipelines using cloud-based or local high-performance computing environments.

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a skilled Bioinformatics Programmer to lead the bioinformatics core for a global heart failure proteomics consortium.

An international consortium has been established for studying plasma proteomics coupled with contemporary bioinformatics approaches (machine learning, pathway analysis, protein quantitative trait loci and mendelian randomization). Large scale proteomics data from large populations and trials are available for scientific endeavors. This position will provide bioinformatics support to investigators of Penn School of Medicine and international collaborators in the consortium, manage biomedical data, construct data analysis pipelines, report and publish findings. There will be opportunities for first authored publications using highly novel large-scale proteomics datasets from landmark studies in the field of heart failure.

The candidate will be able to interact and receive mentoring from experienced cardiovascular researchers at Penn and will interact with global leaders in heart failure research, as well as scientists in the pharmaceutical industry sector. Experience with genomics (including Mendelian Randomization), proteomics and gene-protein correlation analyses is strongly preferred. Experience with deep learning applications for cardiovascular phenotypes (including imaging phenotypes) is also desirable.

Qualifications:

  • The minimum of a Master’s degree and three years of data analysis experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required, in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Informatics or equivalent. 
  • Experience with biomedical research required 
  • Competent in Python and R programming language required 
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing data analysis, Mendelian Randomization and deep learning methods for biomedical image analyses a plus 
  • Apply general statistical methods, machine learning (ML), visual analytical (VA) and other advanced applications for the analysis of (large scale) biomedical data. 
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members
