The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) (https://www.sustech.edu.cn/en/) was established in 2011 by the provincial government of Guangdong, China with the aim of developing a new type of tertiary education and becoming a world-class research university. It is located in the rapidly-growing tech capital city of Shenzhen. The Times Higher Education 2021 survey ranked SUSTech among the Top Ten universities in mainland China.
King’s College London is seeking candidates for the role of Executive Dean of the King’s – SUSTech Joint School of Medicine (JSM). The JSM is an ambitious project between King’s and SUSTech to establish a world-class Joint Education Institute in Shenzhen, China. The purpose of the JSM is to develop innovative, world-class joint education programmes in a number of fields including (initially) degrees in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Biomedical Engineering. It will also seek to engage with high-tech and med-tech industry in southern China and Hong Kong to generate pedagogical and curriculum advances.
The role-holder will be the senior King’s academic based on the SUSTech campus in Shenzhen with responsibility for the academic management of the JSM. The role-holder will play a key role in shaping and guiding the future direction of JSM, building on the existing disciplinary and interdisciplinary strengths and developing further commercial opportunities.
The role has a tenure of five years, renewable subject to review.

Candidates must possess strong communication skills and demonstrable leadership, and have a substantial track record in teaching, research and professional achievement within medicine or the biosciences.

The ability to innovate for the benefit of students and the partner institutions, together with understanding of the translational bridges between high-quality research and serving the needs of patient care and global health will be essential to achieve this.
