Reporting to the Associate Director, Competitive Sports, the Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the administration, development, strategy and implementation of intramural sports programming for the campus community. The primary focus of this position is to manage a forward-thinking, game-changing Intramural Sports program. Specific responsibilities include intramural sport management, development and operation of special events, supervision and training of part-time intramural referees and staff, and oversight of operating budgets.

As Assistant Director, Competitive Sports, you are somebody who loves sports, a great teacher, reliable, a champion of referees, and balance fun and creativity with day-to-day executional skills. Being a great teammate, you’ll work closely with divisions and work teams within the Department of Athletics, PE, and Recreation (DAPER). As part of DAPER, competitive sports at Recreation and Wellness starts with the student in mind and helps their wellbeing through engaging in fair, inclusive, and exceptional sports opportunities.  

In this role you will:

Program Management and Operations (50%)

  • Plan, manage and assess the Intramural Sports program.
  • Orchestrate referee training and development opportunities, implement leagues for multiple sports and schedule needed facilities.
  • Collaborate with student groups to create/manage leagues and tournaments.
  • Develop and maintain program elements to enhance participant experience, develop a sense of civic responsibility of fair play and appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and create a sense of belonging.
  • Produce and support department-wide special events.      
  • Develop and implement an intramural calendar; including leagues, competitions/tournaments and special events.
  • Collect, disseminate and organize enrollment materials, accident reports, assumption of risk forms, and any other required record keeping necessary.
  • Implements appropriate safety/risk management procedures. 
  • Contribute to the development of marketing materials and strategies and assist in the planning, developing, and implementing of outreach functions.
  • Assist with providing social media content to enhance storytelling of participant experience/achievements.
  • Based on assessed outcomes, implement programming changes to enhance the effectiveness of the competitive sports programs.
  • Collaborate with other program units and departments for shared initiatives.

Budget and Administrative Management (20%)

  • Oversee the operating budget for Intramural Sports.
  • Manage online registration, scheduling, forfeits and payments.
  • Manage payroll for student and part-time staff.
  • Order and manage equipment inventory for competitive sports programming.
  • Manage intramural participant registration website (IMLeagues) content.
  • Collect and provide quarterly and annual program and participant statistics.

Staff Management and Student Leadership Development (20%)

  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate staff including supervisors, officials, scorekeepers and support staff to maximize staff recruitment, retention and professional growth.
  • Schedule and lead intramural captains’ meetings and other programmatic meetings as needed.
  • Apply leadership theory, mentorship, and global citizenry principles to staff and student development.
  • May work with selected recreational Club Sports in an advisory capacity.

Other (10%)

  • Serve as a resource to other departments; represent Recreation and Wellness at campus events.
  • Other duties as assigned or needed.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the execution of intramural sports, club sports, and/or sport related special event programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates our shared humanity.
  • Ability to function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • A fundamental understanding of officiating in sports and the ability to teach and/or officiate occasional sporting contests.
  • An understanding of student development theory and application.
  • Knowledge of risk management practices in recreation settings.
  • Ability to learn and understand compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
  • Passion for trying, learning, improving, and sharing best practices to programs and services.      
  • A proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Good teamwork with a strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • NIRSA competencies for programming at the intermediate level. 
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

Certifications and Licenses

  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification preferred.
