SUPERNUMERARY TEACHING FELLOWSHIP IN MATHS

St. John’s College invites applications for a five-year fixed-term Supernumerary Teaching Fellowship in Mathematics (without membership of Governing Body). The appointment is available from 1st October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, and will end on 30th September 2026.  Applications for this post are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.

St John’s College is a part of the University of Oxford, and students of the college are members of the University. The Fellow will be a member of the University, and will have access to the facilities of the University and Mathematical Institute, but this appointment includes no duties for the University, and permission of the college must be sought before any University duties are undertaken. The fifth and final year of the appointment is a sabbatical year to permit the Fellow to further their research.

The annual salary will be on the University’s Grade 6 for Academic Staff (currently £29,176 - £34,804). The Fellow will have rights to lunches and dinners without charge during those weeks of the year when the kitchen is open, the use of an office, and certain College benefits and allowances including teaching and research expenses (currently up to a maximum of £3,000 per year) and a housing allowance (currently £10,560 per year).

The person appointed will teach undergraduates in small groups for up to a maximum of eight hours each week averaged over the three eight-week terms in the first 4 years of appointment. The teaching will be entirely small groups, most often groups of two students, and with a maximum of ten. These `tutorials’ involve discussion of the mathematical content of courses of lectures delivered by the University and taken by the college’s students. There will be no lecturing duties and no formal University examining duties. The person appointed will be expected to teach a number of courses from the first and second year mathematics syllabus; contribute to the preparation of students for University examinations; assist with informal tests and practise examinations set by the college; share administrative and pastoral duties; participate in the undergraduate admissions process; contribute as appropriate to open days, outreach and access initiatives.

Details of the undergraduate syllabus in Mathematics can be found at: http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/courses/material
(Information about second year ‘Part A’ courses is on the undergraduate tab of this page.  Information about first year ‘Prelims’ courses can be found under the archived material, 2019-20.)

The person appointed will have obtained by 1st October 2021 a doctoral degree in Mathematics and will be expected to engage in original research in mathematics.  The college has no specific preference for the area of mathematical research expertise of the appointee.  The person appointed must demonstrate an ability to teach effectively, to contribute to the organisation of the degree and some College administration, and that they have the interpersonal skills necessary for the pastoral care of students.

This is a fixed-term career development post intended for candidates who are at an early stage of their academic career. The Governing Body of St John’s College has endorsed the principle of career development for all fixed-term teaching posts which extend for one year or more. The purpose of this is entirely constructive, and designed to ensure that postholders have access to appropriate support and advice during their period of employment by the College.

The closing date for receipt of applications is noon on Thursday 10th December 2020. Further particulars for the post, including information about the application procedure, can be found on the College’s website at www.sjc.ox.ac.uk. Informal enquiries can be addressed to Professor Charles Batty, Fellow in Mathematics, by email: charles.batty@sjc.ox.ac.uk.

Candidates are also asked to complete a Recruitment Monitoring form, if they are willing to do so. This can be submitted via email (academic.vacancies@sjc.ox.ac.uk).

St John’s College is an equal opportunity employer.
