Overview

Cutting edge fusion energy research requires dynamic business systems, top tier Information Technology support and robust application development. PPPL is seeking an innovator to lead the Application Development Team in our Information Technology Department. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, you will be responsible for the implementation and support of a very diverse suite of business applications. As the Team Lead, you will coordinate the Application Development team to ensure rapid, accurate, and efficient processing of the team's workload. Responsibilities include management of the team, development, oversight, and support of enterprise applications, and efficient project delivery. 

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

Responsibilities 

Leads and manages the Application Development team. Coordinates and assigns work to direct reports. Serves as a point of escalation for the most challenging issues faced by the Application Development team. Reviews daily activities and reports to detect recurring or abnormal computing issues. Plans and develops policies and procedures for carrying out design projects and product support. Involved in regular meetings with team leads and working groups within IT. Works with CIO to develop budgets and strategy for the team. (30%)

Designs, develops, tests, implements, and maintains custom applications based on customers’ requirements. Involves other teams heavily in the deployment and maintenance phases to ensure maximum reliability and exposure. Maintains database backends to ensure scalability and reliability. (25%)

Assist in the collection and documentation of user’s requirements and work plans. Prepare reports, manuals and other documentation on the status, operation and maintenance of software. (15%)

Maintain legacy business applications as needed and assist with project planning of replacement applications. Collaborate with business departments to ensure a smooth workflow. (10%)

Periodically call meetings with customers to ensure high level of customer satisfaction, that our services are in alignment with their needs, and the mission of the laboratory. Provides for the training and education of principle staff and user community as needed. (10%)

Investigates new platforms and designs to replace legacy processes or applications. Provides technology recommendations to improve application inefficiencies. Other duties as assigned. (10%)\                                               

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • BS in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience managing personnel and budgets
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in:
  • Enterprise application development
  • Database management
  • Website development
  • SDK and API usage

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • ASP.Net, C#, Visual Basic, VBScript, HTML5, PHP, JavaScript, Objective-C, Swift, Java
  • Ability to work with minimum direction
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and technical staff with varying skill levels and backgrounds
  • Strong multitasking skills
  • Ability to create end user documentation and support articles in a knowledgebase
  • Windows, Mac OS X, Linux (a plus)
  • Proficient in: ServiceNow, MS SQL, MS Access, FileMaker, Crystal Reports, Visual Studio, SharePoint, MS Office, PeopleSoft, Great Plains, OnBase, Google Apps a plus

Physical Requirements 
Occasional lifting of IT equipment less than 20lbs such as a desktop tower computer or computer monitor may be required.
