Job Purpose:

Interprets, monitors, and analyzes quantitative and qualitative faculty data, about university and school-level faculty hiring, advancement, faculty climate, retention and departure. Produces reports to support the work of the IDEAL Faculty Recruitment and Research committees, the Faculty Diversity Council, the Faculty Senate, the Vice Provost of Faculty Development, Diversity and Engagement and the Provost. Develops and maintains database for IDEAL Provostial Fellows Program and provides reporting related to this program. Must stay up-to-date on current research related to faculty diversity, development, advancement and engagement in order to provide context for reports and to utilize the most current methodological approaches to study these issues. The analyses produced by this position guide senior leaders in creating, revising and implementing university policy and processes to improve faculty development, diversity and engagement. The Organizational Insight Analyst provides consulting for special projects, schools and departments involving faculty issues. This position performs under minimal supervision on both routine and challenging assignments.

Core Duties:

  • Analyze and report on faculty data at the university-level, and at times the school-level, concerning:
    • Recruitment and hiring
    • Promotion and advancement
    • Climate and job satisfaction
    • Leadership effectiveness
    • Retention and departure
  • Stay abreast of higher education research to understand new developments in faculty diversity, development and engagement and develop literature reviews for reports, the OFDDE website and faculty development materials.
  • IDEAL Provostial Fellows Program: Develop and maintain database for program. Compile, analyze and report on applicant and hiring data for the program, including sourcing analysis, applicant patterns in degree fields and subfields, degree-granting institutions, demographic trends, hiring patterns, etc.
  • Answer questions by developing research methodology, gathering data and/or using appropriate statistical techniques on available data.
  • Drive collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources; apply and use algorithms or other advanced techniques to accomplish this.
  • Fully analyze the problem, question existing processes and assumptions, gather data and information, find and evaluate alternative solutions, and propose best course of action.
  • Explore data from multiple angles, determine meaning behind the data, and recommend ways to apply the data.
  • Communicate, convey, and visualize informed conclusions and recommendations across an organization’s leadership structure in a manner to “tell the story” behind the data and influence how organization approaches the challenge.
  • May interact with and influence senior leaders, faculty, and/or senate with written summaries and/or presentations on assigned research.
  • May delineate the information to be gathered, collect data at the project inception, prescribe how to structure the data, and specify the data warehousing structure for future access.
  • Through data, may predict what actions will be taken in a designated timeframe for a prescribed issue/challenge.
  • May need to collaborate with other organizations to gather data. Proactively seek and locate data, including outside benchmarks or comparative data, to support or refute proposed decisions.
  • Assist with OFDDE website revisions, research, develop and post new material. Organize and maintain website as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, including assistance with large OFDDE events, as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (education, sociology, psychology, race, ethnic or gender studies, etc.) and four years’ extensive experience or combination of education and relevant technical field experience solving analytical problems using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Advanced degree strongly preferred.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Proficiency in manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources.
  • Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to positively convey findings and influence senior leadership & faculty.
  • Demonstrated experience querying, processing, analyzing, and reporting on large data sets.
  • Ability to use data retrieval and manipulation tools such as SQL, Brio Query, Business Objects, conjunction with visual data tools to present data clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity and experience with intermediate statistical methods; advanced proficiency with statistical tools such as SPSS, SAS, R or similar tools.
  • Ability to tell stories with data using data visualization software such as Tableau, Excel, SPSS, or similar software in conjunction with strong verbal ability.
  • Ability to use visual data tools to present data clearly to non- technical audiences.
  • Flexible analytical approach allowing for results at varying levels of precision.
  • Familiarity with strategic planning concepts.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Excellent writing skills in the English language.
  • Understanding of current higher education research and best practices in faculty hiring, development, advancement, and engagement.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
  • Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
  • Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.

Working Conditions:
