About the opportunity
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate attached to the Women & Work Research Group (WWRG) in the University of Sydney Business School on a multidisciplinary, cross-institutional, engaged research project on gender and the future of work. This is an exciting opportunity to work with leading scholars at the University of Sydney (and the Australian National University) on a Linkage project funded by the Australian Research Council and institutional partners the Law Society of New South Wales, the Women Lawyers Association of New South Wales, and the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
The post-doctoral research associate will work closely with the Chief Investigators (Cis) Prof. Rae Cooper and Dr. Meraiah Foley (WWRG, Business) and Prof. Ariadne Vromen (ANU). Prof. Cooper will be the post-doctoral researcher’s supervisor.
The project aims to examine women’s and men’s experience and understanding of workforce changes within two sectors at distinct ends of the labour market, namely retail and the law. Ultimately, this project seeks to build understanding and insight to affect change toward an inclusive future of work. The post-doctoral research associate will contribute to this unique project by:
- managing the project in collaboration with the CIs
- conducting fieldwork to build insight
- assisting in the co-design of organisational interventions to enhance gender equality in collaboration with industry partners.
- analysing data and producing industry and public-facing reports.
- writing academic presentations and academic papers.
- preparing media briefs, submissions to inquiries and industry presentations.
- preparing grant applications with a view to building the project.
- organising seminars and events to leverage the impact of research.

- a completed PhD in employment relations, human resource management, sociology of work, or another closely related field
- demonstrated ability to achieve research outcomes, including publications in high-quality and relevant academic journals
- experience in analysing themes such as workplace gender inequality, workplace dynamics, workplace technological change, low paid work, and/or high paid and professional work
- demonstrated theoretical and methodological background, and familiarity with qualitative research methods and tools (quantitative research skills will be seen as an additional bonus)
- experience in successful project management and administration
- evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach, including the ability to exercise initiative and meet deadlines
- the ability to foster collaborative links in academia and with government, industry, and community groups
- excellent communication skills and an ability to discuss research results with non-academic audiences.
