Senior Director of Strategic Academic Projects

Reporting to the Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, the Senior Director of Strategic Academic Projects will provide leadership to many critical School of Medicine initiatives and projects that involve multiple faculty and staff leaders in the departments and in the Dean’s Office. Multiple and diverse perspectives will need to be addressed and synthesized to develop and implement new initiatives and enhance existing ones. Key success factors will include facilitating communications, defining success metrics, projecting financial requirements and identifying sources for financial sustainability, and providing guidance, project direction, and leadership to ensure the outcomes are achieved.
On behalf of and with the authority of the Vice Dean, the Senior Director of Strategic Academic Projects will lead major programs and initiatives across the school in areas where the Vice Dean has primary and shared responsibility. This role will identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the overall functioning of these areas across Stanford Medicine, Academic Affairs, Faculty Development, Faculty Relations and the Ombuds Office. He/she will identify emerging issues and advise the Vice Dean and Senior Leadership of potential strategies for addressing these. Some of these issues may involve identifying/recognizing developing conflicts or stress, where early intervention and conflict resolution may be key. Also, a high-level ability to assess organizational strengths and weaknesses, including leadership agenda-building, will be essential. This role will make recommendations that may impact academic and research capabilities.
This position will be responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and will be accountable for the performance of employees. She/he will directly manage the data specialist and, as programs grow, hire and manage program manager(s); determine program/project priorities; and ensure that work is completed within schedule and constraints.
The Senior Director of Strategic Academic Projects will collaborate with senior faculty leaders, including senior associate deans, department chairs, division chiefs, and DFAs, with university leadership in the Provost and Vice Provost offices, and with senior executives in the health systems. Strong communication, organization, and presentation skills will be key to be effective and persuasive. The ability to influence without direct authority will also be important.
This role works closely with the Vice Dean, Dean and the hospital CEOs, their leadership teams, and faculty leaders to support and execute the vision for Stanford Medicine. This role helps formulate recommendations and works with various stakeholders to define priorities for and advance strategic partnerships to further goals of Stanford Medicine. He/she is responsible to translate strategies into cohesive, actionable, and operational plans.
The Senior Director of Strategic Academic Projects independently leads and direct projects requiring high levels of functional integration and involving multiple disciplines to be managed while overseeing cross functional teams within Stanford Medicine and with University partners. He/she will facilitate discussions to drive recommendation consensus within the scope of his/her responsibility; form and insure the success of team members from other SoM units who will work under his/her direction to create and implement major academic programs and/or to streamline existing academic programs; and, in particular, spearhead programs in furtherance of the Dean and Vice Dean’s critical annual and long-term goals.
Examples of strategic initiatives and projects include:
- Develop a multi-year road map for comprehensive faculty development support, training, and assessment.
- Devise and implement a strategy for academic advancement working with the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), school departments and the Provost’s Office.
- Design and implement a new concept for proactive trainings and interventions to remediate faculty workplace organizational difficulties across the school targeting individuals or specific groups of faculty when needed; oversee implementation of training, and monitor outcomes with ongoing climate surveys. This will require coordinating with OAA, the Wellness Office, school ombudsperson, HRG, departmental leadership, the health care systems, and other school and university offices as appropriate.
- Partner with the Vice Dean to oversee and optimize faculty academic and development programs across the SoM with close interactions with the departments.
- Participate with other leaders on school-wide process excellence efforts to streamline and impact progress in the academic appointment and promotions procedures while maintaining high quality standards and faculty and staff satisfaction.
- Design improvements in communication between OAA/the Vice Dean’s Office with departmental leadership and with faculty.

- Advanced degree
- 10+ years of experience in leadership and / or organizational program development and management
- Experience in an academic setting working directly with faculty leadership
- Strong consulting and facilitation skills with experience in conflict diagnosis and interventions
- Experience building and managing teams,
- Experience using and managing quantitative and qualitative data, and behaviorally based problem-solving techniques to develop and implement strategies and programs
- Ability to advocate for and apply process excellence principles and improvement strategies to new and existing initiatives and projects
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
