Description:

St. Michael's Hospital - Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto are seeking applications for the Keenan Chair in Fibrosis Research. This new Chair will establish a program of fibrosis research in any organ system and the successful candidate will either currently hold, or be eligible to hold, a full-time clinical academic or status-only appointment at the University of Toronto, Department of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The term of the appointment is five-years, renewable once for additional five-year term upon successful review and contingent upon additional funding.  Effective start date is January 1, 2021, or as mutually agreed upon.

The successful applicant will be an internationally recognized PhD or clinician-scientist with an established basic/translational research program focused on fibrosis research in any organ system. The Chair will allow for a strict limitation of non-research activities so that the majority of the successful candidate’s time can be dedicated to carrying out their research program at the highest level of achievement and productivity.

The chair holder will join more than 50 world-class researchers at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science in Toronto, Ontario. The Keenan Centre is home to basic science and translational research at St. Michael's Hospital, and its researchers target common and high burden illnesses and strive to make discoveries that will improve patients’ lives.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD or an MD and additional advanced research training and either hold or meet the criteria at the rank of associate or full professor at the University of Toronto. Applicants with an MD will have the academic position description of Clinician Scientist and must have FRCPC qualifications or equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Applications will be evaluated by a senior panel of University of Toronto and St. Michael’s Hospital faculty in regard to the applicant’s research excellence, record of scholarly activity (including grants, peer-reviewed publications, patents, supervision of graduate students and fellows), national/international reputation, impact of their research, expectation for ongoing academic achievement, and contributions to the field. The endowed chairship will fund research support, including salary and benefits for the successful candidate.

The Chair holder’s remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Chair will be based at St. Michael’s Hospital, and if the Chair holder is a clinician, they are expected to become a member of the St. Michael’s Hospital academic practice plan and will be entitled to additional support commensurate with academic and clinical activities.

Applications will be accepted until November 30, 2020.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae (Web CV or Common CV), a 2-page outline of your academic program (including research productivity, training activities and academic prominence) and a 1 to 2-page description of how you would use the endowment. Names and contact information of three referees must also be submitted.

Submissions to the Selection Committee must be sent electronically to:
