Reporting to the Academic Lead Rural and Remote Health (CRH), this Teaching and Research position, with its primary focus on Remote and Indigenous Health will draw on contemporary professional practice to play and important role in the University’s achievement of its strategic plan, Making a Difference: The 2025 Agenda.

The Senior Lecturer will facilitate educational programs that aim to prepare a health workforce for the unique context of remote and Indigenous acute and primary health care. As an experienced nurse, the incumbent will contribute nursing expertise to the interprofessional health education team of Rural and Remote Health in Central Australia and across the Flinders Rural and Remote footprint.

They will perform teaching and academic administration duties, contribute research effort to developing evidence-based practice and engage with the professional and wider local community in line with Flinders University’s commitment to social accountability.

Specific activities include contributing to the coordination and delivery of topics within the Flinders Remote Health Practice programs, contributing to the NT Medical Program and undergraduate nursing programs in the NT, and health professional student's learning on placement in Central Australia.

The appointee will report to the Academic Lead and will work closely with the Central Australian and Flinders NT education teams and cultivate collaborative relationships with program coordinators and course directors within Flinders University and external professional organisations.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Senior Lecturer will bring recent, ongoing (concurrent) or extensive experience and knowledge of contemporary clinical/professional practice to the role. The role is also expected to make a contribution to high-quality university, professional and community service including the development of evidence for practice.

The Senior Lecturer will be accountable for delivery, continued development, and assessment of nursing knowledge and skills relevant to practice in Remote and Indigenous Health across the range of award and short courses delivered through Flinders Rural and Remote Health discipline with key responsibilities including:

  • Leading innovative curriculum development and teaching methodology for Award and Short Courses relevant to Remote Health Practice.
  • Make a significant and high-quality contribution to research by participating in national/international research collaborations, producing high quality publications and external grant acquisitions.
  • Supervise student research relevant to remote and/or Indigenous health.
  • Develop and maintain a program of research in an area of relevance to the professional of nursing in the context of Remote and Indigenous Health.
  • Contribute to evidence based practice through participation in standards development (including CARPA)
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining beneficial professional relationships and with a view to enhance work-integrated learning opportunities with industry.
  • Identification of external funding opportunities and collaborative partnerships, and implementation of programs to support the education of remote area nurses and the multidisciplinary remote and Indigenous health teams.
  • Participation in Flinders, College and professional organisation committees and related activities to further the strategic goals of the University in rural, remote and Indigenous health.
  • Leadership in building collegial relationships between Flinders Rural and Remote campuses, Flinders Adelaide, relevant Colleges within Flinders and professional organizations, Government, industry partners, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.
  • A commitment to professional activities outside the University.
  • Some out of hours work (including weekends) as well as NT, interstate and overseas travel, may be required.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

Essential criteria

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent qualification or any one of the following:
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed independent research demonstrated to be of an equivalent standard in the discipline area
  • Evidence of professional standing, reputation and qualifications demonstrated to be of an equivalent standard in the discipline area
  • Completion of a higher degree at Masters level in Remote Health Practice or substantial progress toward a doctoral degree in the discipline area.
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
  • Hold and maintain a current membership with relevant professional bodies
  • Demonstrated expertise and a significant track record in remote area nursing.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture, and role modelling behaviours that support the University’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Detailed knowledge of the issues surrounding remote health practice in Australia, including contemporary remote area nursing, population health, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues.
  • Demonstrate ability to practice in a culturally safe manner, including the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their representatives.
  • Demonstrate experience in teaching advanced clinical practice including on-line learning and use of simulation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide high level advice and support, and liaise effectively with a wide range of health practitioners including remote area nurses, Aboriginal health practitioners, allied health professionals, and specialists.

Desirable criteria

  • Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • Midwifery qualifications and experience
  • Recognition of academic standing at a national or international level in the discipline area.
  • Demonstrated leadership within the remote area nursing profession.

Northern Territory Government legislation (the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007) now requires all individuals in child related employment or whose duties involve, or are likely to involve, contact with a child, to hold a valid ‘Working with Children Clearance’ (Ochre Card). This position involves child related work and is assessed as requiring a Working with Children Clearance/Ochre Card
