About the position

The Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) invites applicants for a permanent position as Senior Engineer (1181 senioringeniør) leading the Digital Laboratory of the Industrial Ecology Programme (IndEcol). IndEcol has a focus on understanding resource use and environmental pollution associated with human activities, assessing the environmental aspects of different technologies and modelling society’s use of materials.  We seek to strengthen the research program, in particular in the Digital Lab, by making use of open, flexible and state of the art digital infrastructures.

IndEcol is an interdisciplinary research and teaching programme managing its own International MSc program, consisting of 7 faculty members and about 50 researchers, post.docs and PhDs. IndEcol combines world-class competence in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Input-Output analysis (I/O), and Material Flow Analysis (MFA) with scientists’ contribution to IPCC assessment reports, active participation to the UNEP/SETAC Life-Cycle Initiative, and numerous publications featured in high-ranked journals. IndEcol has a focus on understanding resource use and environmental pollution associated with human activities, assessing the environmental aspects of different technologies and modeling society’s use of materials.

The successful candidate will support activities at the Industrial Ecology Digital Lab. He or she will have responsibility to develop the digital infrastructure for research projects and sub-groups within the Programme. The position will require day-to-day interactions with scientists in the sub-domains of industrial ecology, providing solutions for both running research projects, and also for ensuring longevity of existing research and data produced. 

The successful candidate will be expected to help develop and implement new methodologies within the field of Industrial Ecology. He or she will initiate, develop, implement, and support scientific applications, projects and initiatives to ensure access to and sharing of Industrial Ecology tools and data. Finally, the candidate will be responsible for setting up best practice guidelines for software and database development and operations within the Programme and for communicating these guidelines to new researchers and PhDs.

The position requires competence in multiple programming languages as well as a high level of technical computational expertise. Ability and evidence of use of open-source systems is highly beneficial. He or she must be able to work in a mixed computing environment that includes different operating systems. The candidate must be willing to learn new programming languages and to keep up to date with new advances in digital research. The successful candidate must have a PhD and extensive track records connected to environmental sustainability research. A documented experience in publishing scientific results in international journals is required. Good communication skills, ability to initiate and lead projects as well as willingness to work in an open, international, and interdisciplinary team is required.  The language of work will be English.

The position will be reporting to the program director and is organized under the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, NTNU.

Duties of the position

• Support and develop activities at the Digital Laboratory of the Industrial Ecology Programme in the field of environmental sustainability analysis
• Planning, architecture and development of digital infrastructure across the Programme, including scalable solutions for research data and code management suitable for environmental sustainability analysis
• Support IndEcol researchers in research code design, development and data management
• Develop and contribute to research project proposals

Required selection criteria

• A PhD degree based on intensive data mining, processing, or management.
• Multi-year experience of cooperation and development of research databases and infrastructure (e.g., MRIO, LCA, MFA) in the field of environmental sustainability analysis
• Extensive records (10+) of active contributions to scientific data processing and coding measured by participation to scientific articles in international journals related to environmental sustainability analysis
• Documented experience in multiple programming languages (Python, Rust, Matlab) tailored to the advancing of methods and tools in the field of environmental sustainability analysis
• Documented experience in software architecture, development and/or data management for LCA, MFA or MRIO tools
• Good written and oral English language skills

Preferred selection criteria

• Documented experience in writing of scientific articles, technical reports, and proposals related to environmental sustainability analysis
• Documented successful experience in gathering external fundings
• Documented contributions to open source projects
• Experience with having taken responsibility in national and international projects
• Experience in leading software engineering groups

Personal characteristics 

• A high level of personal responsibility and initiative
• Work independently as well as part of a team in accordance with the projects’ objectives
• Ability to work in interdisciplinary projects and teams

Salary and conditions

The position of senior engineer (1181 senioringeniør) is paid in accordance with the Public Sector salary regulations, depending on qualifications and length of service. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria's in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
