We invite applications for a Research Assistant position in the laboratory of Professor Felicity Gavins (Professor of Pharmacology), within the Centre for Inflammation Research and Translational Medicine (CIRTM) at Brunel University London.

The CIRTM is an internationally recognised research centre within Brunel (directed by Professor Gavins) which aims to deliver excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and clinical translation. Programmes of research within the Centre are directed towards understanding the inflammatory and immune processes that underlie human health, disease and healing, with a focus on novel target identification for drug discovery and treatments for human disease

The successful candidate will join the internationally respected laboratory of Professor Gavins where they will support the ongoing research focussing on inflammation and thrombosis in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. This is a two-year position (in the first instance) for a Research Assistant with experience with in vivo models of disease (including recovery models) and the running of immunology assays (including cell isolation, cell culture, flow cytometry and biochemical assays). The candidate should feel comfortable in taking a leading role in designing, executing and supervising other members of the laboratory in carrying out necessary experiments. A keen interest in inflammation, thrombosis and translational medicine is essential.

Main accountabilities & Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Setting up and Performing in vivo models of disease applicable to the laboratory.
  • Processing animal/human blood/tissue samples for in vitro assays.
  • Functional in vitro cell immune assays and tissue culture.
  • Flow cytometry.
  • Running biochemical assays, such as western blotting, PCR.
  • Training and supervising of students and staff as necessary.
  • Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
  • Ordering consumables and ensuring equipment is maintained.
  • Organisation and record keeping of reagent libraries, SOPs etc.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be relevant to the role.

A BSc/MSc in an appropriate discipline (Pharmacology/Physiology/immunology or a related area) or attained equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience is essential for this role.
