POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director, Office of the Dean, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, the incumbent serves as the divisional coordinator of critical incidents and issues management for the senior academic and administrative leadership in the Dean’s Office, and across the academic and administrative units of the Faculty.

The Faculty Critical Incident Coordinator is responsible for creating case management plans for issues that require a coordinated response, ensuring the Faculty manages and responds to cases in keeping with appropriate policies and procedures. The incumbent will be familiar with the University of Toronto Code of Student Conduct, Sexual Violence Policy, Residence Codes, Athletics Codes, Human Resources Guideline on Civil Conduct, the Guideline for Employees on Concerns and Complaints Regarding Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, and the University of Toronto Workplace Violence Program. 

The incumbent has a functional reporting relationship with the Director of Safety & High Risk in the Office of the Vice-President Human Resources and Equity, Vice Provost Students to ensure close collaboration with Central case management of high risk matters.  The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the coordination of Faculty-wide safety, crisis and issues training and response. The incumbent works collaboratively with the offices of Campus Police, Campus Safety, Human Resources, Labour Relations, Environmental Health and Safety, Office of the Vice Provost Students, Dean, School of Graduate Studies and other central University offices as needed as well as the senior leadership in the academic and administrative units.

The incumbent is the primary point of contact in managing issues and crises that occur within the Faculty or affect the U of T Engineering community. On behalf of the Dean, the incumbent may represent the Faculty on central committees and working groups regarding crisis and issues management. The incumbent provides information to the Dean and Director, Office of the Dean, on issues and incidents that occur in the division, ensuring that relevant services are deployed, and appropriate actions and follow-ups undertaken. The incumbent liaises with providers of such services and completes on-site follow-up as necessary with parties involved in the incident. 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION:

University degree in a related field (e.g., psychology, public health, criminology, etc) or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.  Strong preference for a graduate degree (MSW or similar) or Emergency Management Certificate.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 5 years related experience in a university or public sector setting with extensive experience in crisis management in the areas of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Strong familiarity, understanding and experience in dealing with individuals with mental health issues and illnesses. Highly developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate both orally and in writing at all levels of an organization, including, preparing reports and delivering presentations to a variety of stakeholders.  Familiarity with Ontario and Canadian statutes, including the: Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act; and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

SKILLS:

Computer experience required, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Exercises sound judgement while balancing crisis and issues management response with an awareness of institutional liability.

OTHER: 

Highly developed skills in oral and written communication; ability to produce detailed and comprehensive reports from a large volume of complex information; ability to interact with individuals at all levels within the University as well as externally; ability to deal with senior University Officers in a manner which facilitates cooperation; high degree of political acuity and judgment; flexible listener; strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team; ability to manage and resolve escalated conflicts and complaints related to discrimination claims; analytical skills; extensive knowledge of equity data and resources and how to best utilize them. Demonstrated ability to act calmly under pressure.
