About the opportunity
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate for projects focused on quantum simulation using large two-dimensional ion crystals in a Penning trap.
The Quantum Control Laboratory at the University of Sydney is focused on studies of quantum control, metrology, and quantum simulation using trapped ions. The lab is a part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), a collaboration of five major Australian universities focused on fundamental and applied research in quantum physics and engineering. Furthermore, the University is part of the newly founded Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA). Candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with external partners supported by major international projects. Our team has developed and operates a novel Penning-trap system to access and control two-dimensional arrays of Beryllium ions. We have recently added capabilities to engineer interactions between ions to mimic variable range spin couplings in quantum many-body physics. The current projects will follow our successful work on quantum control engineering and the generation of correlated spin states in ion crystals. Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute broadly to the group and participate in the:
- development of new techniques in the control and detection of large two-dimensional quantum systems, leveraging insights from the fields of quantum physics and atomic physics.
- study of exotic phenomena in quantum magnetism and quantum many-body physics using ion crystals in a Penning trap.
- development of laser systems to generate optical dipole forces and implement ground state cooling of beryllium ions.
Primary responsibilities for the candidate will include further development of this experimental apparatus, leading new experimental research directions, mentoring postgraduate and undergraduate students, and providing day-to-day oversight of laboratory projects and students.

- a PhD (or near completion) in Physics or equivalent in a relevant field
- proven ability to lead projects as part of a small team, and deliver major research outcomes
- evidence of proficiency at oral and written communication
- experience in one or more of the following experimental areas: ion trapping, atomic physics, precision metrology using atomic and optical systems, experimental quantum simulation, quantum-enhanced sensing with trapped ions
- evidence of independent contributions to scientific or technical outcomes
