The Departments of Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital and at the University of Toronto are inviting applications for a permanent full-time position for an Academic Surgical Oncologist or Colorectal Surgeon with expertise in the minimally invasive surgical management of colorectal cancer. The effective date of this appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for August 01, 2022

The successful candidate will provide advanced care of patients with surgical disease of the gastro-intestinal tract. The Division of General Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital comprises a highly cohesive group of surgeons whose clinical practices are focused in the following areas: colorectal surgical oncology, breast cancer surgical oncology, benign colorectal diseases, trauma/acute care surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, biliary tract disease, and minimally invasive bariatric surgery. 

The successful candidate will possess graduate-level training to enhance scientific enquiry in areas of public health, social determinants of health and health disparities, health services research, care of disadvantaged populations and the impact of cancer in low- and middle-income countries. We seek a Surgeon-Scientist to lead a program of research that will have global impact in these areas. The successful candidate will possess a strong record of clinical excellence, commitment to teaching, and professionalism.

The Division of Gastro-enterology at St. Michael’s Hospital is recognized as a province wide referral center and holds a world class reputation. The candidate will join two or three existing colorectal/surgical oncologists. Oncology is recognized as an important cross-institutional program at Unity Health Toronto.

The candidate must be proficient in the English language, hold a medical degree, and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful candidate will have additional fellowship level training in surgical oncology or colorectal surgery. We seek a candidate with a proven record of success and capacity to create and sustain a program of research in health inequities for oncologic disease in disadvantaged populations, with specific attention to global surgery.

Estimated remuneration is expected to be in the range of $400,000-500,000 per annum, based on fee for service activity, qualifications and experience.
