Background
Founded in 1894, City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City attracts around 20,000 students (over 40% postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and staff from over 75 countries.

In the last decade, City has almost tripled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research.

Led by President, Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university.

The Research Centre for Systems, Autonomy and Control at City is involved in a research project with German Telekom Research and BT to develop new multipath communication protocols for 5G network access. This project includes the development of a working network testbed consisting of smartphones and proxy server functionality enabled on a remote server. Project partners are involved in specification, testing and standardization of the new protocols. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in work at the heart of the telecommunication operator development, standardization and implementation processes.

Responsibilities
The postholder will work closely with research lead Dr Rakocevic to implement the network testbed, specify test scenarios and perform testing. The testbed software has already been developed, and postholder will use their Linux and Android development skills to implement the testbed on smartphones and perform tests with real Internet traffic. The postholder will be responsible for the documentation of the tests, will collaborate on research papers and on standardization efforts. Regular meetings will be held with industrial partners to discuss progress, share results and plan test scenarios.

Person Specification
The successful candidate will have a Masters degree in Computer Science or Electronic Engineering, or a Bachelors degree with some experience. The postholder should have excellent knowledge of TCP/IP network protocols and some experience with Linux programming. Experience in Android app development is desirable. This is a part-time position within a well-established research collaboration – flexibility and good verbal and written communication skills are essential. This is an excellent opportunity for a young recent graduate to get experience in the formal testing procedures for the telecommunications industry.

Additional Information
City offers a sector-leading salary, pension scheme and benefits including a comprehensive package of staff training and development.
