DOCTORAL STUDENT IN Modelling and machine learning for psychotherapy registers

The tentative starting date for the position is 1st of January 2021 or as mutually agreed, possibly immediately after selection.

Dr. Tom Rosenström is setting up a new research group at the Department of Psychology and Logopedics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, working in collaboration with HUS Helsinki University Hospital’s division on IT-Psychiatry and Psychosocial Treatments. We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral student to join our team. The position is funded up to August 2023 and can be later extended to August 2025.

The group of Tom Rosenström is looking for outstanding candidates for a PhD Student trainee position to study what works in psychotherapy and to whom it suits, using modern statistics together with large psychotherapy registers. The novel approaches may also shed light to the still-open fundamental question of ‘why and how psychotherapy works’. We use a wide range of statistical techniques from machine learning and multivariate statistics to causal inference, together with multiple healthcare and national data registers.

We are looking for a creative thinker with strong analytical skills and high motivation to advance psychosocial treatment and mental health research. Our group is well-connected internationally and the hired PhD Student will have a chance to present her / his findings in national and international conferences, and also a longer period abroad may be discussed.

The PhD Student candidate must hold, or soon receive, a master’s degree, and have background in mental health research and / or statistical methods. The ability to think independently and an interest towards quantitative research approaches will be prioritized. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are required. The appointee must apply and obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki within the probationary period of 6 months applied in the appointment.

The salary of the position is based on level 2 of the demands level table for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary will be 2200-2500 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
