Role Description

Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate University with an excellent global reputation for industry-relevant education and research. We are the only university in Europe with our own airport and runway. Through the strong links with industry we have built over the past 70 years, we focus on defining and delivering the aircraft, airport and airspace management of the future.

Cranfield Aerospace is one of the eight major themes at Cranfield University. The Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems is a specialist centre established over 15 years within the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing dedicated to research and teaching in autonomous and space systems. We cover all types of autonomous vehicles including airborne, ground and marine as well as autonomous space exploration.

The main aim of this project is to address the current and future challenges of airborne communications for autonomous air vehicles to provide seamless mobility and connectivity. This will need to develop a new communications framework for real time-critical data transmission and seamless mobility solutions to present a step forward for future flight connectivity and system integration requirements. As a part of the framework development, there is a need to provide data link analysis and measurable using simulation environments. UAS connectivity filed test and experimental will be carried out at Cranfield smart road Multi-User Environment for Autonomous Vehicle Innovation (MUEAVI). The post holder will be developing the data communications link using simulation tools for autonomous air vehicle. The post holder will work closely with colleagues to make effective use of the facilities.

Candidates are expected to be confident and independent researchers with a PhD (or close to completion) in Telecommunication Engineering or relevant engineering discipline, such as autonomous systems, or computer engineering.

You will also have a proven track record of publishing in high quality journals, excellent time-management skills, be able to work both independently and as part of a team and be experienced in carrying out experimental research.

In return, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key position, and to support world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.
