The University of Western Australia (UWA) is ranked amongst the top 100 universities in the world and a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight research-intensive universities. With an enviable research track record, vibrant campus and working environments, supported by the freedom to ‘innovate and inspire’ there is no better time to join Western Australia’s top University.

About us

The Frequency and Quantum Metrology Research Group is a node of the newly funded national ARC Centre for Dark Matter Particle Physics (DMPP), which recently began in 2020 and is also a node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS).

We have undertaken the first laboratory direct dark matter detection experiments in the Southern Hemisphere and have a network of collaborators both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, we are involved in the most famous Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX), operated at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, as official collaborators.

Under EQUS we have multiple dilution fridges that cool to near 10mK, where thermal noise is no longer an issue and we are left with a system which is dominated by the quantum regime. In this regime many interesting new physics can be revealed.

We are undertaking a range of low-energy precision experiments to search for Dark Matter, test the underlying principles of physics in search for an answer to quantum gravity and undertake novel experiments in the quantum regime.

About the opportunity

The ORGAN Axion Dark Matter Detector was installed in November 2019 in the quest to answer the riddle of dark matter. We are also undertaking a range of low-energy precision experiments to search for other forms of Dark Matter, as well as test the underlying principle of physics in search for an answer to quantum gravity.

As the appointee you will, under limited direction of Professor Michael Tobar (https://centredarkmatter.org.au/allposts/michael-tobar / https://equs.org/users/prof-michael-tobar), participate in, and supervise graduate and undergraduate students to participate in projects related to Dark Matter and Quantum Systems.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience and demonstrated experience in the field of physics, specifically related to fundamental physics and quantum mechanics.
  • Demonstrated relevant research experience including publications in high impact journals, relative to opportunity
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability in working independently and effectively in a team
  • An ability and willingness to supervise Honours, Masters and PhD research students.
  • Highly developed organisational skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and conduct research.

Full details of the position responsibilities are outlined in the position description.

In preparing your application, you are asked to submit a cover letter, address the selection criteria in the position description and upload your CV along with copies of your education certificates.
