SMC is seeking an experienced accounting professional with high integrity for the position of Fund Accounting Manager. The manager will be responsible for overseeing accounting for all investment activities, including cash investment activities, trade processing and settlements, and will work with the investment team to set up and fund new investments, ensuring the accuracy of all related legal and financial information.  This position requires a strong understanding of GAAP accounting and private equity fund administration. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast paced, deadline driven, environment in which first principles thinking guides their reasoning.

CORE DUTIES

  • Manage accounting and fund administration activities; develop system and procedures to support reporting for the organization.
  • Review financial reports, capital calls, distributions, trades, wire transfers, fees, accruals, and valuations prepared by analysts. 
  • Onboard new investments, working closely with the investment, legal, and operations teams and external service providers.  Oversee maintenance of investment and manager information including operational contacts, wire instructions, legal entities, legal terms, ownership, benchmarks, attributes, and other critical information.
  • Design and execute internal controls for investment valuation and accounting. 
  • Identify operational challenges and opportunities for continuous improvement to ensure data accuracy and timeliness and increase efficiency.  Plan, execute, and lead process improvement initiatives.  Act as business owner on other major initiatives.
  • Cultivate strong relationship with the investment team, providing the highest level of client service.  Proactively coordinate investment activities and provide timely, relevant, and accurate investment information. 
  • Develop strong partnership with University departments such as Tax and Investment Accounting as well as with custodian bank and other service providers.
  • Manage fiscal year-end audit.
  • Work closely with director to determine staffing needs, make hiring decisions, and provide coaching, training, and mentoring.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Master’s degree or CPA and six years of applicable experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • CPA designation or candidate preferred.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply, interpret, and implement Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and strong understanding of private equity fund administration.
  • Strong technical skills, significant experience with portfolio accounting software.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, set deadlines independently and complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, to clearly and effectively synthesize and articulate complex concepts in a simple, meaningful fashion.
  • Must be a critical thinker, intellectually curious, and unafraid to ask questions or give opinions. 
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills, as well as ability to contribute as part of a multi-functional team.
  • Ability to utilize internal/external resources and interact with all levels of the organization with a cooperative and service-oriented attitude and demeanor.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Excel skills, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Advanced analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Team orientation and strong interest in supporting the work of a university endowment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
  • Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
  • Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.
