This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic researcher with knowledge in deep learning and image analysis to join an international project funded by the Wellcome Trust Innovations Flagship programme. The post-holder will work closely with scientists and clinicians with a background in image analysis, ultrasound, machine learning/deep learning, infectious disease, to conceive, develop and translate ultrasound AI technology for improved critical patient management in the intensive care unit (ICU) in a resource limited setting in South East Asia. The successful candidate will be based in the KCL St Thomas’ campus, London, with occasional travel to Vietnam (when and if it is safe to do so), and in close collaboration with partners from other countries.

Main purpose of the job:

Ultrasound imaging (US) is a safe, portable and comprehensive tool for monitoring and management of many different types of patients, including patients in the ICU. However, ultrasound requires, on one hand, manual dexterity and expertise to operate the probe and find the clinically relevant views; and on the other hand, extensive training and skills to accurately interpret and analyse the resulting images.

In this project, we investigate Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to facilitate the use of cardiac US in the Intensive Care Unit by local clinicians in a resource-limited setting. The primary aim is to investigate, develop and integrate computational methods to process, ultrasound images and videos to 1) achieve clinically relevant imaging planes and 2) extract cardiac biometrics to assist patient management.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, or be close to completion of a PhD, on Biomedical Image Analysis or similar, and a solid background in designing and programming deep learning algorithms.
