Vacancy Ref: 13631

Salary (R1): £35,963 - £42,488 per annum including London Allowance

Full-time, fixed-term for 12 months

Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded project titled “Multiphysics and multiscale modelling for safe and feasible CO2 capture and storage”. The research team at Brunel will be in collaboration with Imperial College and CCS industrial partners. The post is for one year in the first instance and can be continued based on performance.

This work package aims to understand optimal working conditions for CO2 injection, maximal storage and minimal leaking, in particular with H2 as a contaminant. High-fidelity lattice Boltzmann simulation techniques will be developed to investigate CO2 trapping characteristics, e.g. its dispersion or deposition in porous media, mimicking flow conditions under deep earth surfaces such as saline aquifers. A better understanding of the flow physics under typical trapping regimes will be used to guide injection engineering to achieve better efficiency with minimal energy input and minimal leakage occurrence.

Applicants will be expected to recently receive a PhD degree in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or Physics discipline. Experience in applications and development of lattice Boltzmann approaches; and computational research in carbon capture and storage; and computer code development & parallel computation will be seen as unique advantages. In addition, s/he should be highly motivated and able to work both independently and in a team in collaborate with internal and external academic and industrial colleagues.

Please contact Dr J. Xia at jun.xia@brunel.ac.uk for an informal discussion about the post.

Closing date for applications: Friday 25th September 2020
