Job Summary

The Security Systems Technician reports directly to the Security Systems Administrator and is responsible for the installation, diagnosis, troubleshoot, repair and maintenance of access control systems, alarm systems, and the associated mechanical equipment throughout the campus, at both on-campus and off-campus locations owned and control by Caltech. The Security Systems Technician shall be able to read and interpret plans, specifications, and perform work assignments with minimal supervision. Additionally, the Security Systems Technician shall be able to support the development and management of an Institute wide security technology plan, aligned with contemporary standards and best practices in security systems such as, CCTV, access control, alarm systems, and emergency notification tools.

The Security Systems Technician is also responsible for assisting the Security Systems Administrator in the training of Campus Security and contract security personnel in access control systems, access card management, and dispatch protocols related to access controls.

The Security Systems Technician is a member of the on-scene field command post response team, which assists EOC personnel during campus emergencies and long-term events.

Job Duties

  • At the direction of the Chief of Security and Parking Services and the Security Systems Administrator, the Security Systems Technician must be able to:
  • Coordinate and work with vendors during planning, installation, and upgrade projects
  • Provide recommendations for security technology
  • Implement security projects by adhering to industry and Institute standards and meeting project requirements
  • Interpret blueprints, diagrams, specifications and schematics
  • Assist in the installation, programming, activation, and testing of security technology systems
  • Participate in the maintenance program for security technology to assure operability
  • Assist the Security Systems Administrator during internal audits of the access system to assure all records are current
  • Assist the Security Systems Administrator in providing Division Administrators /Gatekeepers access records quarterly or as requested
  • Assisting the Security Systems Administrator with delivering training programs to security technology end-users
  • Interface and collaborate with various Institute stakeholders such as Information Management Systems and Security (IMSS), Facilities Management, and Student Affairs
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Must possess an Associate’s degree in computer science, IT or relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 5 or more years in both technical and administrative security systems deployment and maintenance
  • Must have extensive knowledge of WinPak access software
  • Must have extensive knowledge of Honeywell access panels (N1000 to Pro3200 panels)
  • Must have extensive knowledge of Digital Watchdog IP camera systems
  • Must be able to interact with all members of the general public, while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality
  • Must be able to work in a diverse work environment such as construction sites and laboratories
  • Must be capable of working with minimum supervision in a multi-task oriented environment
  • Must have a verifiable history of excellent customer service and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must be familiar with law enforcement and/or security administrative processes
  • Must possess strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must demonstrate professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Must successfully achieve Jeanne Clery Act Certification within 6-months of hire date
  • Must have experience with Windows servers and workstations
  • Shall be familiar with and have experience in proximity credentials and binary bits
  • Must have a working understanding of and hands-on experience in electronic and mechanical door locking hardware devices
  • Physical requirements:
    • Standing at times for prolonged periods, walking, reaching, climbing, lifting 50 lbs. or more, carrying, writing, pushing, pulling, hearing, squatting/kneeling, driving, speaking, seeing, and restraining suspects
    • Must be able to walk Campus properties
    • May be exposed to noise, chemicals, heat/cold, carcinogens, fumes/gases, dirt, and human tissue/fluids, extreme weather and temperatures
    • Irregular work schedule, multiple concurrent tasks, frequent interruptions, detailed work, frequent deadlines, periods

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years in a higher education environment
  • Certified Honeywell Win-Pak installer certification
  • Comprehension and experience with networking fundamentals, PING, IPCONFIG, TRACEROUTE command, TC/IP, subnets, and port communication
  • Digital Watchdog IP VMS certification
  • Knowledge and practical experience with Sentry RMS system
  • Jeanne Clery Act certification
  • Prior experience and familiarity with KRONOS
  • Prior experience and familiarity with AiM
  • Knowledge of Title VII and Title XI
  • Valid State of California BSIS guard license
  • Formal leadership training via FLETC, IACLEA, FBI LEEDA, or an equivalent
  • Current NIMS/SEMS certification, with specific training in the following:
    • IS-100 – Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)
    • IS-120.a – An Introduction to Exercise
    • IS-200 – ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
    • IS-700 – National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction
    • IS-800.b – National Response Framework, An Introduction
    • IS-230.d – Fundamentals of Emergency Management
