About the School   

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), a partnership between Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and Imperial College London (Imperial) is training doctors who put patients at the centre of their exemplary care, as well as researchers who are finding better ways to treat patients. The School, which offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes, is named after local philanthropist Tan Sri Dato Lee Kong Chian. Officially opened on 28 August 2017 by then Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Mr Teo Chee Hean, LKCMedicine aims to be a model for innovative medical education and a centre for transformative research. The School’s primary clinical partner is the National Healthcare Group, a leader in public healthcare recognized for the quality of its medical expertise, facilities, and teaching. LKCMedicine and NHG have established the Health for Life in Singapore (HELIOS) Study, a state-of-the-art population cohort study. The primary purpose of HELIOS is to identify the environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors that cause heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases in the multi-ethnic population of Singapore. The HELIOS study will measure baseline health and determine long-term health outcomes in up to 100,000 Singaporeans. The study will enable us to address key questions about health and disease with precision.

Responsibilities

The HELIOS Population Health study has a wide range of opportunities available for potential Research Assistants to train and develop skills which would be useful in their future research career. The training openings below would suit graduates with a background in biology, biomedical sciences, genetics and genomics, nutrition, mathematics, statistics and computer science. We are offering training programmes to fulfil five separate roles in the group:

  • Wet-laboratory RA: To conduct sample processing and/or molecular analyses. Procedures include sample preparation and cryopreservation, DNA/RNA extraction, quantification of gene expression (sequencing) and metabolic profiles (mass spectroscopy).
  • Clinical-research RA (similar to a clinical research coordinator): Learn to carry out high-quality research assessment of participants using a range of approaches including retinal imaging, lung function, 12 lead ecg, and carotid ultrasound.
  • Biostatistics RA: learn and implement approaches to quality control and advanced statistical analysis of the data collected to address scientific objectives Perform laboratory administrative functions including procurement of laboratory inventories, replenishment of consumable materials and laboratory safety.
  • Database RA: Learn the database platforms used for data collection (ORACLE and others), and contribute to their maintenance and evolution to meet new demands and deliver new functionalities.
  • Nutritional RA: Take part in a research programme focused of nutritional assessment and intervention to improve metabolic health and prevent of people at high risk of diabetes based on clinical and molecular features.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree in relevant field, e.g., biology, biomedical sciences, genetics and genomics, nutrition, mathematics, statistics and computer science or other life sciences suitable for the respective post.
  • Previous experience in relevant discipline is desirable, but not essential.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Organized, motivated, self-driven, team player and reliable.
  • Adaptable in a rapidly changing research environment.

The prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Postdoctoral Fellowship (LKY PDF) was established in 1991 under the Lee Kuan Yew Endowment Fund. The Fellowship supports and promotes young and outstanding researchers to realise their full potential in the areas of Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Medicine.

The Fellowship will be awarded concurrently with the candidate's appointment as a research staff in NTU.

Eligibility: 

• Excellent academic records and research potential.
• Recent PhD graduates, or with at most 1 postdoctoral training from a reputable university. 

Terms and Conditions: 
• The Fellowship will be tenable for a period of 3 years.  
• In addition to an attractive remuneration, the successful candidate will be awarded a research grant of S$180,000 for research consumables and research related expenditure.
