Description

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division (SSCD) at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a part-time Lecturer to teach one course in Autumn 2020 as the Chicago Studies Teaching Scholar. The successful candidate will collaborate with the College’s Chicago Studies office to develop and teach an undergraduate course that incorporates experiential learning (e.g. excursions, guest lecturers, applied research or projects) aimed at integrating classroom instruction with the life of one or more of the city’s diverse communities. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will also participate in events and activities sponsored by Chicago Studies.  More information about the College’s Chicago Studies program can be found at http://chicagostudies.uchicago.edu.

Chicago Studies will also support Teaching Scholars in establishing an affiliation with one of the para-curricular units on campus (e.g. research institutes, cultural institutions, etc.) for their term of appointment to enable them to engage with the student body more generally and to introduce students to additional opportunities for involvement in the life of the city.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a master’s degree or higher in an area relevant to their proposed course and prior experience teaching at the college level. Practical experience that demonstrates a purposeful investment in the civic, cultural, and intellectual life, policy challenges, administration, scholarship, planning, or service of the City and region of Chicago is preferred.

To be considered for the position you must submit your application through the University of Chicago Academic Job Opportunities site https://apply.interfolio.com/74906 and upload the following: 1) a curriculum vitae and 2) a description of the course you would propose to teach, including a narrative describing both its content and its experiential learning elements (500 words maximum).  A draft syllabus is not required.
