Job Details

This position is for a talented and ambitious postdoctoral scientist to work on a BHF-funded programme on redox-regulated adaptive pathways in heart failure, with specific focus on metabolism, growth and stress responses. Previous experience in the in vivo characterisation of cardiac function in experimental models of cardiac overload or MI (e.g. with high resolution echocardiography, MRI) and in isolated heart perfusions is highly desirable. The project will also include ex vivo analyses (e.g. histology, immunostaining), cell, molecular biology and metabolomic assays. Training will be provided in those techniques that are unfamiliar to the appointee.

The postholder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working on several related aspects of cardiovascular pathophysiology, with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities within the King’s BHF Centre of Research Excellence.

Key responsibilities

 

  • Develop and undertake research of high quality consistent with making a full active research contribution in line Department/School research strategy.
  • Manage specific pieces of activity to an agreed timeline and within a specific budget including literature reviews, data collection and analysis, report writing.
  • Attend and, as appropriate, present research findings and papers at internal academic meetings and external professional conferences, and to contribute to the internal and external visibility of the department.
  • Work as a conscientious and committed member of the team in order to achieve the aims of the projects lab group.
  • Facilitate collaboration and networking which engages and supports the activities of the project
  • Participate in educational activities as appropriate to the stage of your career.
  • To be committed to your own personal career development.
  • Liaise with the administrative team for the support of the project.
  • Contribute to publications arising from this project.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be relevant to the role outline.

  • Translate knowledge of advances in the area of expertise into research activity

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Background in cardiovascular biology
  • Good written presentation and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Good IT skills
  • Cardiovascular research experience
  • Successful completion of research projects (published papers in high Impact Factor journals)
  • Home Office Personal Licence or equivalent
  • Cell and molecular biological techniques
  •  Self-motivated and able to work either independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to carry out known/learnt techniques unsupervised
  • Flexible/able to respond to change in current professional context
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own workload and to keep clear and well-organised laboratory notes and records
  • Commitment to continuing personal and professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Background in redox signalling
  • Langendorff heart perfusion
  • In vivo cardiovascular physiology (e.g. echo, MRI)
  • Histology, immunocytochemistry
  • Gene-modified models including breeding strategy and genotyping
