BACKGROUND:

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria is recognised nationally and internationally as an outstanding institution in terms of its education of health professionals, its research and its clinical service. Furthermore, it is an institution with a tradition of excellence and a proud history. Besides being involved in the training of health professionals, it has a vibrant postgraduate research programme with three tracks; Clinical Trials Pharmacology, Regulatory Affairs Pharmacology and Basic Pharmacology. Successful candidates can obtain a BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD in any of three areas. Additionally, for candidates with a MBChB, there is the option to specialise in Medical Pharmacology to obtain a MPharmMed. The Faculty is therefore seeking a dynamic individual with a proven record of teaching and research for a permanent appointment at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating and developing curriculum of undergraduate pharmacology modules and postgraduate degree specialisation;
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, with emphasis on clinical pharmacology;
  • Conducting research at a nationally competitive level, including supervision of research projects, obtaining research funding, and establishing a research niche aligned to the University and Department goals;
  • Performing other academic and research duties as may be delegated by the Head of Department;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: LECTURER

  • A Medical qualification, with associated Master’s or MMed degree;
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • At least one DHET accredited publication;
  • At least one-year teaching experience in pharmacology.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: SENIOR LECTURER

  • A Medical qualification, with associated Master’s or MMed degree;
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • At least three DHET accredited publications, with evidence of conference outputs;
  • At least two Master’s students supervised;
  • At least three years teaching experience in pharmacology;
  • Course coordination with evidence of curriculum development.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
  • Good computer skills;
  • Scientific writing skills;
  • Proactive and goal-oriented nature;
  • Leadership qualities;
  • Dedicated to professional development, including obtaining a Doctoral degree (if not yet obtained).

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience in a clinical environment;
  • A valid driver’s licence;
  • Recent DHET accredited publications in the past three years;
  • Experience in clinical trials and/or regulatory affairs related to pharmacology;
  • Health professions education training.

The total remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes.
