University Assistant (post doc) at the Department for Teacher Education

With 27 subjects, one specialization and over 12,000 students enrolled in teacher education programmes the University of Vienna is the biggest teacher education institution in Austria. The Centre for Teacher Education is the organizational focal point for all questions regarding the teacher education programme at the University of Vienna. In cooperation with the other faculties and centres as well as the partner organizations of the 'Verbund Nord-Ost'; it aims to strengthen and further develop the quality of research and teaching in the field of teacher education. We're searching for a committed university assistant (post doc) for the section Education / Digital Education and Learning at the Department for Teacher Education.

A "Computational Empowerment Lab" is being set up for the group. Computational Empowerment is understood as an extension of the concept of Computational Thinking in the sense of an empowerment to participate self-determinedly in the digital society and not only to understand technological development, but also to actively participate in shaping it. One building block for this are innovative digital technologies that are easily accessible and can be realistically acquired by schools. These include 3D printers, cutting plotters, digital games, augmented and virtual reality devices, simple robots, AI applications, sensors, electronic kits, digital musical instruments and conductive textiles. In its research the Computational Empowerment Lab intends to focus on technologies already now that could realistically be available in schools in a few years time and to confront students in teacher education with these technologies. The Lab will provide an infrastructure for research in which prototypes of digital educational technologies can be designed and evaluated flexibly, directly and iteratively.

Duration of employment: 6 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
Your work will be directly related to the Computational Empowerment Lab - you will be involved in the establishment of the Lab and actively use the Lab in your research and teaching activities at the University of Vienna. You are expected to have a thorough understanding of different forms of educational technologies and their effects and are able to promote and scientifically accompany the design and development of educational technologies on a technical, didactic and creative level.

The active participation in research, teaching and administration involves
- Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
- Involvement in research projects / research studies
- International publications and presentations
- Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
- Preparing / writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis
- Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

Your profile:
- Doctoral degree/PhD, for example in computer science, educational science or another relevant discipline
- Interdisciplinary orientation and the willingness to work across disciplines
- Professional competencies in one or more of the following areas: Educational Technologies, Digital Fabrication, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Media Didactics, Game Design, Serious Games, Technology-based Learning, Ubiquitous Computing, Human-Computer Interaction
- Methodological competencies in qualitative and quantitative research with a focus on teaching and learning research, user-centre design, design-based research and design thinking
- Didactic competences in tertiary (and ideally also in secondary) education, teaching experience in learner-centred and research-led teaching
- High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- IT user skills
- Ability to work in a team

In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have
- Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning
- Experience of working on research projects
- Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
- International presentation experience
Desirable qualifications are
- Knowledge of university processes and structures
- Experience abroad
- Experience of supervising students
