Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

in urban air quality starting earliest from October 2020 for a fixed-term employment contract until February 2023 in an Academy of Finland funded research project Sustainable urban development emerging from the merger of cutting edge Climate, Social and Computer Sciences (CouSCOUS). The duration of the position is 30 months but the start can be delayed until end of 2020.

The postdoctoral researcher will be working in the urban meteorology group in INAR (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/urban-meteorology). The group studies urban atmosphere, air quality and greenhouse gas surface exchanges using a wide-range of methodologies including eddy covariance technique, land surface modelling and a large eddy simulation (LES). We are particularly interested on how city planning impacts local atmospheric conditions and air quality.

CouSCOUS is an interdisciplinary project between INAR, Computer Sciences and Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. It will combine the fields of artificial intelligence, atmospheric sciences and social sciences in order to provide urban planning solutions that optimize the local air quality by developing novel methods taking into consideration population structures and traffic flows. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for high-resolution air quality simulations in case study areas in Helsinki, Malmö (Sweden) and Guilford (UK) made using the novel LES model PALM where sectional aerosol and chemistry modules have recently been added. The focus will be on understanding the key factors impacting local high-resolution air quality distributions.

Ideal candidates are required to have:

• a doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, aerosol sciences or other related disciplines;
• strong programming skills;
• proficiency in spoken and written English;

Working language is English. The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3300–3700 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience.
