Job Details

The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Singapore Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore. Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from the emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities.

We invite applications for the position of Research Fellow to join our programme that investigates the role of microbial communities in mediating corrosion of metal surfaces in the marine environment. The programme focuses on materials at high hydrostatic pressure that mimics conditions in the deep sea.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigate the role of materials microstructure on microbially influenced corrosion (MIC)
  • Undertake research into microstructure changes, composition of these microstructures and develop methodologies to study these changes
  • Work closely with a team of microbiologists and chemists to better understand these processes
  • Carrying out high-throughput metallographic analysis of different steel alloys
  • Performing MIC experiments to map and quantify surface damage
  • Correlate the damage to the underlying microstructure

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in materials science and engineering
  • Prior knowledge and hands-on experience in the following:
    • Corrosion and electrochemical properties of metals
    • Crystallography and characterisation of metal alloys (e.g. X-ray and/or electron diffraction, metallography, polycrystalline microstructures)
    • MATLAB or Python (e.g. image analysis, data visualization, dimensionality reduction)
  • Excellent level of spoken and written English
  • High-quality publication record in relevant journals

Hiring Institution: NTU
