PhD Candidate in Research Policy

Lund University School of Economics and Management is one of eight faculties within Lund University. More than 4 000 students and 450 researchers, teachers and other staff are engaged here in training and research in economic history, business administration, business law, informatics, economics, statistics and research policy.

The Department of Business Administration is one of the largest in Sweden and has a history of more than fifty years as a leading academic environment for research and education in accounting & finance, strategy, entrepreneurship & research policy, organization and marketing.

Description of the subject area 

The Department of Business Administration announces a vacancy for a doctoral student in Research Policy within the MUM platform. Making Universities Matter (MUM) is a knowledge platform – funded by the Swedish Innovation Agency, VINNOVA. The MUM platform is a collaboration between scholars at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University. The successful candidate for this advertised position is expected to focus on the response of universities to calls to engage with societal challenges, such as those formulated in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Analytical themes include exploring 

  1. the character and implications of new initiatives by the sector related to this call,
  2. understanding the long-term role of universities for creating sustainable societal development and
  3. comparing the societal value and role of various types of responses from universities. 

The PhD student is expected to conduct independent research on a topic within the general theme outlined above and to collaborate with other researchers in the platform.  

Work tasks 

The PhD programme in Research Policy at Lund University is a four-year programme for a doctoral degree. The doctoral degree consists of two parts, courses (60 ECTS credits) and a thesis (180 ECTS credits). 

The main work task for a PhD candidate is active participation in the PhD programme, which involves independent research and taking courses that are part of the programme. The PhD candidate is expected to actively participate in the research project by doing independent research (with supervision) and thereby contribute to the project objectives by writing and publishing research articles based on the empirical results obtained in the project. The PhDs are also expected to contribute to the overall objectives of the platform and to communicate research results to policy makers, university management and the public. The PhD candidate will be provided with necessary equipment and office space at the department. 

Eligibility/Entry requirements 

To be qualified the applicant must hold either a master’s degree or have completed 240 ECTS credits of university studies. Of these at least 90 credits must be accomplished in a subject relevant to the third cycle study programme, including a degree project relevant to the research studies, equivalent to at least 15 credits. A person may also meet the specific entry requirements if he or she has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Other requirements

  • Very high proficiency in English, in speech and writing.
  • Applicants should hold interest in working interdisciplinary and collecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data.

Basis of assessment 

The applicants will be assessed on the basis of their prospects of meeting the requirements for a doctoral degree (PhD) in Research Policy. Particular emphasis will be on the following:

  • Academic merits, particularly at the Master’s level.
  • Bachelor and Master theses (with special importance attached to the Master thesis).
  • The submitted research plan.

Other merits and distinctions which attest to the applicant’s ability to perform in the PhD programme.

Regulations concerning appointment as a PhD candidate can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1–7 §§ and SFS 1998:80. For appointment to the position, the applicant is required to be eligible for admission to the doctoral (PhD) programme in Research policy.
