Position Focus:

Yale Student Health (SH) provides primary care to all 6000 undergraduate, and 7500 graduate/professional students and their spouses. We work closely with Mental Health and Counseling, consisting of over 30 clinicians, Acute Care, open 24/7, and the Infirmary and Hospital rounding teams. We also collaborate with our patient educator, SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Education), and a team of nutritionists. Access to multiple on-site subspecialties, the pharmacy, diagnostic radiology, and laboratory rounds out our ability to provide comprehensive and timely care. Advanced Practice Practitioners in the Department of Student Health are expected to provide patient-centered, culturally sensitive care using evidence-based medicine. We are interested in candidates who prioritize collaboration and professionalism, and who can readily apply their education and experience to the care of our unique and talented, highly intelligent student population. An ability to easily communicate with, and teach, people from all walks of life is imperative. Practitioners are expected to stay abreast of changes in clinical guidelines, and best practices, and are encouraged to regularly attend national conferences with a goal of bringing back information regarding cutting edge research and expert knowledge to the group. Practitioners are also expected to serve as resources for our RNs and medical assistants.

Responsibilities include:
 

  • Obtain and fully document detailed and appropriate histories and physical exams; collaborate with students in the formulation of a differential diagnosis and plan of care; and execute care in a timely manner.
  • Maintain professional, clear, and regular communication with consultants and students regarding plan of care.
  • Assist students with navigation through the specialty clinics, and the hospital system, particularly when the students are waived.
  • Communicate with Yale New Haven Hospital personnel, Infirmary staff, Yale University Deans and Heads of College, and parents regarding individual patients when appropriate.
  • Maintain clean and up-to-date charting, including closing encounters within 24 hours, answering all mychart messages within 48 hours, and sharing and explaining all lab and radiologic study results with students within 48 hours of availability.
  • Assist in coverage of duties when colleagues are out.
  • Participate in late and weekend hours.

Essential Duties

  1. Examines patients to collect information about their physical condition
  2. Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination.
  3. Conducts complete physical examinations; provides medical evaluation and treatment to patients; develops treatments plans and monitors patient’s progress.
  4. Advises patients on results of laboratory tests and recommends referrals to specialists or other medical facilities.
  5. Collaborates with physicians, nurses, counselors and other medical staff to provide the best medical care.
  6. Provides preventive health practices to patients to maintain and improve health and prevent illness.
  7. Coordinates patient care including ordering of laboratory tests and radiographic studies.
  8. Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education or Master’s Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program.
